"I spoke to Giselle at Concrete Creations and received a quote for a new semi-circle driveway for the front of my residence. In addition to the driveway, I wanted a connecting sidewalk to both of my front doors. The quote was extremely reasonable, and she was very professional. It took me 3 months to get this approved in The Woodlands due to the amount of paved surface area versus natural surface. When approved, Concrete Creations completed the work quickly. I am thrilled at the result and think they "hit it out of the park." The new driveway is awesome! Thank you!"

"Did three different jobs for me. Reliable, friendly, courteous crew led by Enrique. It was for widening existing driveway. Excellent work, cleaned up everything afterwards. Used rebar to reinforce driveway. I highly recommend. Installed irrigation system. Got necessary permits. Great courteous service. Knowledgeable about sprinkler system, helped set up timer system. Poured 8x10 patio to add to existing patio. Leveled it so it matched existing patio and used rebar. Their work was excellent. Came on time, cleaned up everything afterwards. Even used 'dug up sod' to some bare spots on my lawn. The next day, returned to put sealer on it."

"Valentin Enviro Irrigation did such an excellent job on our irrigation system. They took charge of all the permits that our city required from start to finish. It was such a relief to have a company who could and would help with that part of the job. The sprinkler system is top notch and our yard looks great. We highly recommend them - they are exactly what type of company that you would want to use!!"

"Cobblestone Pavers is a family-owned company that does top-notch work paving patios & driveways. I hired this company to replace my old concrete patio with pavers. We chose Belgard Dublin Cobblestone pavers. Jose Rico, the owner has an amazing work ethic. He and his crew completed my 600 sq ft patio in 2 days! They arrived early every morning at 7 am and wrapped up their work by 4 pm. He and his crew are very professional and meticulous. I give them 5 stars and a thumbs-up! Chitra, Sugar Land"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The answer to whether or not you need to get a permit before you start your driveway can vary widely based on local ordinances and the scope of your driveway ideas. In most urban and suburban areas, a permit is needed before building a new driveway to ensure that a homeowner is using safe materials and proper drainage practices while designing and constructing a new driveway. In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.

While some areas may allow for a slope of up to 20%, this is often the maximum slope for driveways, with a few exceptions of up to 25%. Other regions may have a maximum of 12%, 15%, or 18%, so check with your local building department to ensure you’re laying a driveway that is up to code for your location.

Think of the street as a way to capture all the elements on either side of the road, including the road—a street encompasses the homes or other buildings, the trees, and the road of a given area as defined by the beginning and end of the street on a map. A roadway, however, is the component of the street where cars travel.

Building a road on a slope requires careful planning and will normally require a drainage system underneath to prevent flooding and damage to the road over time. Your professional may lengthen your road to create switchbacks if the slope directly to your home is too steep, as there are regulations for maximum road slope. The drainage system will help prevent runoff from the higher side of the slope from damaging the asphalt or concrete. Keep in mind that building a road on a slope isn’t a good DIY project, as a lot can go wrong.

New asphalt goes through two stages: drying and curing. Drying typically takes 24 to 72 hours, after which the surface is solid enough for light use like walking or careful driving. While you may be able to park on it after 72 hours, the surface is still soft and should be treated gently. Full curing is a much longer process, taking anywhere from 30 days to a full year for the asphalt to reach maximum strength. During this extended curing period, the asphalt is susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles, sharp objects, and high temperatures. Factors like weather, the specific asphalt mix, and application thickness all influence drying and curing times. For the most accurate timeline and to ensure the longevity of your new asphalt, it is always best to consult with your installation contractor for their specific recommendations.
