"I hired Brite Electric to expand the electric capacity at my house and to add a 240 volt outlet for my ev car charger. Pete did an excellent job performing these tasks in a timely manner. He effectively communicated in detail the job tasks and answered all my questions. Pete was dependable and did not vary above the quoted price. I would definitely call Brite Electric for any future electrical work."

"Outstanding communication and very professional service. I would highly recommend Mr. Electric. Received both e-mails and texts on appointment to include a photo and short bio of the actual electrician (Brad Mason) who would be doing the work. Wish all home service providers did the same. Brad was on time (actually a few minutes early). He installed 30AMP breaker and associated RV plug in our garage. To avoid any sheetrock repairs it was necessary for him to drop the line to the house electric panel through a wall with foam insulation, with very limited head/body clearance for him to work. No mess left behind from the actual plug installation on another wall."

"We recently hired Current Connections Electrical to install and upgrade the exterior lighting around our home as well as install string lights on our pergola. We couldn’t be happier with the results. Matt took the time to listen to what we wanted and offered smart suggestions to improve both aesthetics and functionality. The installation itself was done with great care- neat wiring and clean work area. It’s clear that he takes pride in his work and treats your home with respect. We highly recommend Matt and Current Connections Electrical to anyone looking for high quality, reliable electrical work!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Most electric water heaters have a built-in shut-off switch, so you can simply turn that to the OFF position. Some water heaters have the switch inside a panel, so you might need to unscrew the panel, remove it, move aside the insulation, and then shut the water heater off. To make sure it’s off, you can also locate the switch for your water heater in your electrical panel and shut the power off there. Most electrical panels have dedicated switches for the water heater, so you can shut off the power without affecting the rest of your home.

The standard copper wire gauge to use with any 30-amp circuit is a 10-gauge wire. The National Electric Code specifies a 10-gauge wire with appliances like water heaters running on 30 amps. If you try to use a smaller gauge wire, such as a 12 gauge, with a 30-amp breaker, you run the risk of the wire overheating and melting or causing a fire. Because of the safety hazards, the gauge of the wire is not an area to try to cut costs when connecting a 30-amp breaker to a water heater.

Call your utility company immediately. Do not go outside, even in your own yard, and keep pets indoors. Downed power lines pose a serious electrocution hazard. They can also cause large power surges that could damage your appliances, so it’s a good idea to shut down power to your home if possible. If your breakers trip, leave them off until the utility company finishes its repair work.

Yes, if something sparks when you plug it in or turn it on, it's important to unplug it immediately. A spark from an electrical appliance or device could indicate a short circuit, damaged wiring, or other electrical problems that could cause electrical fires or electrical shock. By unplugging the appliance, you can reduce the risk of electrical hazards and prevent damage to the device itself. It's important to avoid using the appliance until it has been inspected and repaired by a licensed professional to ensure that it’s safe to use.

You’ll need to locate and hire an electrician near you if there’s an electrical project you don’t feel comfortable tackling yourself. Generally, look for a contractor that specializes in the type of appliance or component that you need help with. For wiring, outlets and similar projects, a general electrician is your best bet. For larger remodels, a general contractor will often take care of electrical projects via subcontractors.
