"FIVE STARS!! EMPWR is awesome please bring them your business. Eugene The owner just saved us so much money! Single mom here on a budget. My electricity went out and I tried to do my do diligence by checking the breaker but I missed something. The owner was kind enough to face time with me and saw the issue. He explained what I missed and then we had lights. Please call them for all your electrical needs. This was the most helpful honest company I've ever encountered."

"The work never happened. The contractor Aaron, provided me with a quote of over $1600.00 for a routine electrical job that involved trenching to bury a power line. I provided all of the materials, and this was a 4 hour labor job at the maximum. The quote was clearly outrageous. But, it was a holiday and I was willing to pay a premium. Mr. Electric dropped their price from over $1600.00 to $900.00, but at that point I felt the job was still overpriced. The contractor Aaron was very nice, but clearly bothered by the pricing he was forced to charge people. I felt that he was caught in the middle, it was just an unfortunate situation. All in all, I would use them again for simple problems, but just not complex jobs.

"Ken and his team rewired a studs up remodel in downtown Austin during Covid for us. They were flexible, competent and actually showed when they said they would. They even responded to random texts answering questions and taking on more work we had to force them to take money for...seriously he's amazing. In addition to a new panel, removing all old wiring and installing new wiring for the complete house, Ken ran lines and installed 12 POE cameras, ran fiber to an exterior junction, installed networked smoke/CO2 detectors, and installed about 20 pot lights in the ceilings. The house being from the 1950's and having random "quirks" with pinned down old wiring didn't bother Ken or his apprentice and I found them at the house a couple of Sundays making sure they got the work done. Seriously, it's almost like I want to tell random people at the coffee shop "hey you need an electrician? I know this company 'Morningstar Electric.....""

"When I initially submitted my work request via HomeAdvisor, I received multiple responses along with an offer to visit the site to provide a more realistic quote. The entire experience from scheduling an appt for the estimates to actually completing the job went so smoothly and professionally. Calvin and Sebastian were a pleasure to work with. They were very professional yet friendly and thorough with their job. They cleaned up well after their job as well and overall process couldn't have gone any better. I would highly recommend Calvin and Sebastian for any of your electrical needs."

"We had lightning rods installed at our home after having 2 previous lightning strikes. The first strike was minor, with only slight damage in the yard. The second was significant when a very large pine tree was hit close to our house causing various electrical issues in the home -- despite having a whole home surge protection system. Just months after having the lightning rods installed, lightning struck an even larger pine tree in our small back yard, Thankfully, the lightning rods saved us! It was a huge strike, and we had no damage at all in the house. These lightning rods were potentially life-saving."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Whole-house generators can run continuously for extended periods, even for weeks at a time (around 400 to 500 hours), as long as they have a sufficient fuel supply. However, this type of extensive use will increase wear and tear and can shorten the generator's overall lifespan. During long periods of operation, it's important to check and refill the engine oil as needed, potentially as frequently as daily depending on the model. If your generator uses a fuel tank, ensure it is kept full to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

Yes, an electrical fire can start even if nothing is plugged into an outlet. While a correctly functioning outlet poses no risk, a fire can be caused by faulty wiring, damaged outlet components, an overloaded circuit, or other electrical problems hidden behind the walls. If you suspect a fault, immediately turn off the circuit breaker and contact a professional electrician to diagnose and repair the issue.

The most common gauge for indoor outlets around your home is 12- and 14-gauge wires. But if you’re working with larger appliances like ovens, washing machines, or dryers (all of which require more amplitude), you might find 10-, eight-, or six-gauge wires to help support those hefty appliances.

A sump pump can be plugged into a regular, 110-volt outlet with three-prong openings, but it must have GFCI protections per the NEC, meaning you’ll need a GFCI outlet and circuit. Sump pumps require two outlet openings, one for the plug to the motor and one for the float switch.

The size of your home will help determine the size of your electrical panel. Usually, the decision comes down to a 100-amp electrical panel versus a 200-amp panel. Smaller homes, especially those without an HVAC system, may be able to get by with a 100-amp panel.

If you have a larger home or need to power AC, a 200-amp panel should be the best fit. It’s unlikely that you’ll need a larger panel than that unless you have a larger home or unique electrical needs, but an electrician can help you make the final call.
