"I would definitely recommend Aaron's Heating & Air Conditioning for your heating and cooling needs. Alonzo (manager) was always available when I needed information on something and kept me informed on the progress of the work. The workers were all very professional, polite and cleaned up after they finished. Even after heater was installed, Alonzo checked up on me to make sure the heater was working well. Great Service! Definitely going to use their service again."

"Keeping family members happy and comfortable in their own home brings peace to them as they age and peace to their adult children that are now caregivers to them. ALL of Western Electric HVAC staff provided multiple service options and provided the best upgraded service needed for my mom’s old house. Service calls were also very timely. GREAT communication by all the staff!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances.

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

To extend your HVAC system’s lifespan, it’s crucial to keep up with maintenance. This includes changing filters and thermostat batteries, keeping the outside unit clean and clear of clutter, and lubricating moving parts. Watch out for leaks, mold buildup, and blockages to ensure your unit stays in good working order. Spotting these issues early can be the difference between a simple, wallet-friendly repair and an expensive replacement.

There are several AC unit problems to troubleshoot, but luckily you can identify them by keeping a close eye on your system. Look out for the following signs that your AC needs repair:

  • Unusual noises during operation

  • AC unit blows warm air

  • AC unit doesn’t come on or turn off with temperature changes

  • Strange odors come through the vents

  • AC unit cycles on and off rapidly

  • Indoor air is more humid or less comfortable than usual

  • AC unit keeps tripping your breaker

  • Fan in the outdoor compressor doesn’t operate when the AC is on

Most units are designed only to cool the house down to 20 degrees less than the temperature outside. This means that if it’s 99 degrees Fahrenheit out and you’re trying to cool your home down to 65 degrees, you’ll notice your AC is struggling.

Lower the blinds on all your windows, turn on your ceiling fans, and keep the thermostat at a consistent temperature to help your AC do its job. Investing in an HVAC maintenance plan also helps because pros will come out to inspect and tune up your unit regularly, keeping it in optimal working condition.

To make the most out of your AC, consider implementing the following best practices:

  • Choose the right size AC for your home to ensure your unit runs as efficiently as possible.

  • Choose a window with shade, as direct sunlight can cause your AC unit to overheat.

  • Clean or replace the filter at least every two months.

  • Inspect the AC’s fan and straighten it if necessary.

  • Discontinue use immediately if you suspect a malfunction, as running the AC while broken can lead to significant issues.

  • Turn off (or adjust the temperature) when you leave the house.
