"We had a great experience with Spartan Exteriors when we had James Hardie exterior siding panels installed for our house. They were installed over the original plywood panels (using it as the substrate), which eliminated most of the potential demo (and the mess of demo!), and gave us a faster completion time. The crew took the right amount of time to do it right – I really appreciate this kind of professionalism. The crew showed clear knowledge and experience for properly installing Hardie products, which is key to a quality finish and long-term resilience. The entire crew had wonderful attitudes about the work and were easy to talk to when something needed to be discussed. The project manager supported the crew well, was very fast to respond when they needed additional materials. He checked in with me and the crew regularly, and pitched in to help when needed. We had some areas that presented challenges to the siding crew especially the walls behind our HVAC and city utilities equipment -- the crew did an amazing job installing around these items and still making the siding look great. All of the siding and trim work look really great and give our home a fresh new look."

"Rich and his team were professional and timely. They worked through rough weather conditions and didn't allow any adversities to create opportunities for making excuses. Their final product was excellent! Within 3 days, my entire fence was taken down, removed, and fully reconstructed. I will definitely recommend RC Construction for fence repairs/replacement."

"Silver has done a few home projects for me. He rebuilt a cedar fence around the perimeter of my home using high quality cedar and materials, he came back to complete the project with a stain and it looks fantastic. I believe I have the nicest fence in my neighborhood! Silver also worked with me to figure out the scope of a big home trim and paint project I needed to do on my 17 year old home. He was so patient as we worked through what needed to be done, and answered all of my questions, sometimes more than once...this work is not in my wheelhouse of knowledge and Silver understands how to care for his customer to ensure they feel good about the work as it is being completed, and follows up past when the project is closed out to ensure everything is as it should be. Silver said he would "take care of me" and he truly did. Beyond the high quality work Silver and his team does and use of top of the line materials, Silver's communication pre-project, project, and post-project are top notch. This was an extremely important element of the customer care he has. I will continue to use Silver for my home project and carpentry needs. He is my contractor and I'm thankful for the relationship we have built."

"I used the company Champion Window Company of Wichita, LLC to replaced three windows for my home. I would have given them a five for quality but there was a small leak that ended up needing caulking. Overall I had a good experience with the company."

Siding questions, answered by experts

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

While you can perform minor siding repairs or even install it yourself over small areas, it is generally best to hire a professional siding company. Siding installation is a time-consuming and complicated process that requires specialized tools and experience. Most homeowners lack the skills to ensure proper alignment, weatherproofing, longevity, and durability, especially for more complex jobs like vertical siding. The money saved on a DIY project may not be worth the time and potential risks of improper installation.

Generally speaking, the thicker the siding, the higher the quality. Thicker siding provides a stronger resistance against extreme weather conditions. Thicker siding also tends to fade more slowly under the sun. Hardie boards, a popular fiber cement siding option, is usually 5/16 inches thick. Meanwhile, masonry-finished cement siding varies from 5/8 to 5/8 inches thick.

Concrete log siding can last several decades, from 30 to 50 years or more, as long as you keep up with proper maintenance. Luckily, concrete log siding is much lower maintenance than typical types of wood siding, so you’ll also have fewer expenses during that time. To keep your concrete log siding in good shape, you’ll simply need to reseal it every two to five years. Confirm with your manufacturer to determine how often to reseal.

Hardie board is more expensive than vinyl siding. Vinyl siding costs $3 to $12 per square foot, on average, with cost skewing toward the lower end of that range. Hardie board siding costs $7 to $18 per square foot, depending on the style, color, and trim. However, it lasts twice as long and often looks nicer, meaning you’ll see a higher bump in your home value and greater curb appeal from Hardie board.
