Small jobs welcome

"James came into a difficult project, abandoned by another contractor, and in just two weeks accomplished more than we ever could have expected. His team is reliable and does great work. James also gave us some solid advice that helped us do what really needed to be done and saved us time and money. Highly recommend Elemental Design."

"My Home Services LLC completed a home renovation project. The project included demolition and complete remodel of three and a half bathrooms, which included installing a tile shower and tile floor. This included drywall and tile installation, replacing the bathtubs and toilets, and molding replaced. They also replaced the tile and wood floor in the kitchen and Landry room with tile flooring. They replaced the storm door to the front of the house as well replacing a large window in the living room. They also patched all the drywall holes from the previous electrical work, which replaced all the switch, plugs and fixtures in the home, as well installed canned lights and installed new lighting in other areas of the home. They also completely painted the entire home. This included ceiling, walls, closets, pantry, and patching and completing dry wall repairs. They are very detail oriented and did an outstanding job. The communications were outstanding through the entire process they are honest and trustworthy. The project was completed in six weeks. They were on time every day and the job completed as promised. Great company, highly recommended. This company was excellent: high standards, excellent work ethic, prompt, patient, customer attentiveness, concern for quality and detail. His pricing is competitive and reasonable. The work was top notch. They addressed any concerns we had and had solutions. Would highly recommend them. Admittedly, I was uneasy at first about hiring a company I found online, but I'm sure glad I found them! I now have a contractor whose phone number is worth keeping! Reasonable prices and excellent work. They were very neat, meticulous and cleaned up after. Responsive, accommodating to my needs and took pride in their work."

"So I decided last minute that I was ready for some bathroom renovations in our home this fall but could not find a contractor to commit to the project. K&M came the same day I posted the project in November to do measurements and provided me with a reasonable estimate within a week and were on the job within two weeks of posting on home advisor. In general, the guys were great. They showed up usually within 30 mins of the scheduled start time and took great care in making sure they didn’t ruin any of our homes wood flooring. They cleaned up nicely every day and had our bathrooms tiled, painted and put up three new shower doors over an 8 day period. At first the time estimate for the project was 5-6 days but ended up being 8 which I think likely happens with most contractor services. K&M was amenable to speeding up their pace near the end when I told them I was expecting a house full at Christmas and had it done the day before our home invasion. They were very good about getting the “noisy work” done before our daughter’s scheduled afternoon naps which was great. They weren’t loud in general and did beautiful tile work. My only criticism is that some of the paint work did have to be redone after the “rush finish” but they were more than willing to come back and fix the areas I was unhappy with. We had a giant windstorm the week after they finished and when they came to collect their debt even offered to fix one of our shutters which had been blown completely off the house for a very reasonable price. Overall these guys are highly reliable and do great work and I would hire them again!"

"Jason was wonderful to work with. He was happy to come back and finish up a few things that there was some confusion about even after he had been paid for the job. I’ve never had a contractor do that before and I appreciate his patience since the confusion was mainly on our part, not Jason’s."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Building a barndominium means converting a barn into a house. Barndominiums are becoming popular as spacious and stylish alternatives to typical housing structures. Old barns that become houses traditionally consist of wooden construction. However, newer structures, such as pole barns, often contain metal exteriors and roofs. Converting a metal outbuilding into a house presents an excellent opportunity to create a barndominium from metal.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.
