"A home inspector recommended Taylor Waterproofing, saying it was a quality company that had reasonable pricing. When I called, the owner said he was booked beyond when I needed the work done, but after considering a moment, he said he would get the work done even if it meant working late or over the weekend. He kept in touch, so i never worried that the work wouldn't happen. When I met his team, I was very impressed with their professionalism and their kindness. The work was done well within my time constraints! My crawl space was left perfectly clean; he did way more than I expected. Working with them was a great experience!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, staining a brick home can increase a home’s value, assuming your pro does a good job and you keep up with maintenance tasks. Staining brick is a much better way to increase a home’s value than painting brick, as the latter can cause chipping, warping, and bubbling. Brick stain, on the other hand, gets absorbed by the surface, so it can still breathe.

Modern brick homes have a brick facade over standard framing and sheathing, so the brick offers minimal added structural stability. A home with traditional brick construction is more durable than a stick-built home, as the double-layer brick walls and rebar resist higher lateral wind loads and support heavier loads up top, as well.

Cobblestone fell out of favor with the advent of motor vehicles. Asphalt and concrete are both much smoother surfaces allowing for a smoother ride. Asphalt is also much cheaper, especially for driveways. However, we didn’t stop using cobblestone altogether, and you can still see it as a decorative option in both homes, in parks, and in pedestrianized areas of cities.

Always work with licensed and certified masons in your area when installing a stone wall or even a stone veneer. Just like all home designers, they should provide an impressive portfolio and offer a free estimate for the project. Pick the pro who fits your budget and schedule and, most importantly, helps you realize your landscape vision.

You should generally drill into the mortar joints when installing shutters on brick. Mortar is softer, which makes drilling easier and puts less strain on your tools. It also lowers the risk of cracking a brick—something that’s a lot harder to fix. Mortar holds fasteners well enough for standard shutters, and if you ever need to patch the holes later, it’s a much simpler job than dealing with damaged brick. Just keep in mind that if your mortar joints are too thin or the hardware calls for brick anchoring, you'll need to check the manufacturer’s recommendations and adjust accordingly.
