"We have a 50 year old chimney that has not had any upkeep or maintenance done in decades. The brick was spalling and literally crumbling all over the place. After calling around and getting several quotes, Cody not only had the best price but also the best customer service. The finished product looks great and we couldn’t be happier with the service. Would definitely recommend him for any masonry projects!"

"My son bought a house in Fountain City knowing that there was occasionally water in the basement that would need to be dealt with, but the torrential rains this past spring and early summer quickly moved that need from “can do later” to “must do now.” His realtor and the home inspector both recommended Thomas Waterproofing for value and quality of work. We found both to be true - while still a huge expense for a new first time homeowner, we felt the price was fair and below industry average. The job took twice as long as projected (not sure what they put in the concrete back in 1947), but was done as bid and the crew did an excellent job of cleaning up afterwards! Taylor was happy to answer any questions we had before, during, and after the job. Would definitely recommend."

"I called American Foundation and Waterproofing regarding a significant, but localized, leak in a basement foundation wall. Michael arrived on time for the inspection appointment and performed a thorough inspection. He identified the cause of the leak and suggested several fixes that I could try myself. If the suggestions do not work, I will definitely hire this company. I believe they are honest, professional, and know what they are doing."

"Jacob W. did an amazing job when he came out and inspected my cabin's foundation. He was on time, professional, and friendly. The best part was that he gave me the great news that there were no foundation issues to be concerned about and that everything looked good."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

The size of your pizza oven will determine the number of bricks necessary to build it. So the bigger your pizza oven, the more fire bricks you’ll need to purchase. Keep in mind that fire bricks cost about $3 each.

Real stone is exactly what it sounds like: It’s real stone sourced from the earth without additives. It is durable and unique, but it’s difficult to work with because of its weight, challenge in sourcing, and high cost. Stone veneer mimics the look of real stone but is actually engineered with a mixture of Portland cement, natural minerals, and a colorant. While it’s more affordable and easier to work with, it’s less durable and may appear manufactured to the trained eye.

You should clean your home’s brick once per year. This applies to exterior brick, but also to cleaning brick fireplaces. Create a homemade cleaning solution with equal parts vinegar and water. Use a soft-bristle brush to scrub the solution into the face of your brick and remove dirt, algae, and stains. Cleaning will protect brick from damage and boost your home’s curb appeal.

A traditional German schmear uses mortar, making it unsuitable for adherence to painted surfaces. Professionals recommend removing any existing paint before applying mortar. However, you can rough up the painted surface and clean it to test if the mortar will stick. Remember that the underlying paint's texture and color may affect the schmear's final appearance—so starting with a bare brick wall will ensure the ideal finish.

You may not need a hammer drill if you’re planning on drilling one or two very small diameter holes in brick. For holes with a diameter of 3/16-inch or less, a regular drill with a masonry bit can do the job. However, the bit will heat up quickly, and the process will take significantly longer than with a hammer drill. Prepare to cool your drill bit down in a bucket of water more often.
