"From my first Mount Valley Foundations evaluation appointment with Carlton Cisson to the construction team assigned to reconstructing and encapsulating my grusome crawl space foundation mess (Shaun Dixon, Alex Hernandez, Milton Martin and Dre Nesbitt) I experienced nothing but professionalism, positive & friendly demeanors, constant and thorough communication and a completed job above my expectations! Hoping I never have to have such foundation work ever done again, but will certainly call Mount Valley again, if I do!"

"Sean Condron and his team are total pros. They did a major home renovation for me. They were just remarkable and I trust them implicitly. I plan to have them build a mountain home for me on my land. Sean gave me really good advice that saved me money. He cared about me as the client and did not try to “upsell” me. My main home is in Winston-Salem and I would love to have Sean and his team to help me with my home here! I recommend them unconditionally."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

The premise for painting a brick building is fairly simple: Prime the bricks to seal the surface and apply the top coat to protect your brick home. However, it’s easy to miss a few important steps if you’re starting from a raw brick surface and don’t know the basics of how to paint brick. So be sure to reach out to a local professional painter if you have any reservations about correctly painting your brick house.

A mason lays brick or stone together, sometimes with mortar in between the bricks and stones, and sometimes without mortar, also called a dry-stack or surface bonding. Examples of work masons do include:

  • Brick, stone, or cement block houses and buildings

  • Freestanding stone or brick walls

  • Chimneys with wood-burning fireplaces

  • Cement block basement or crawl space walls

It’s called cobblestone because it’s made of stones that are “cobbed” together. A cob is a term that refers to rounded lumps. Originally, cobblestone streets were made from pebbles and stones gathered from riverbeds that had been rounded over time by the passage of water. The term has nothing to do with a cobbler, which is the term for someone who makes and fixes shoes.

You can purchase from many brick manufacturers and distributors via their websites, where you can also get estimates based on the quantity you need. You’ll find bricks at your local home improvement stores as well, though they won’t have as much of a variety to choose from. As for antique bricks, secondary selling websites like eBay can be a great resource.

Depending on the amount of soot present, you can vacuum some of it using a brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner. Then, remove the leftovers with a mild cleaner, such as dish soap or vinegar mixed with water. Before applying a cleaning solution, saturate the bricks with clean water to prevent the cleaner from penetrating beyond the surface and causing structural damage to the bricks.
