"We had some sheet rock water damage in our master closet which we traced to the roof vent for our Range hood. We called Ridge Roofing and had an appointment set up in a couple of days, Due to some weather damage Ridge Roofing was swamped on the appointed day, however we were notified promptly and were rescheduled for the next day, I am very happy that we were kept up to date and understand completely how things can get jammed up. Dustin Lee showed up the following day on time and after looking at our vent determined that the vent itself and the connection to the roof sheathing and the surrounding shingles were in good order and that the only thing that needed to be done was to remove and replace the tape that connects the duct to the vent. I am extremely happy with the results and Dustin refused any payment for his time. We will definitely be relying on Dustin and Ridge Roofing for any future roofing requirements."

"I had a leak, Carolina Roofing was the only one to come out to check it out. Other companies would schedule for 4 and 5 days out.. I needed someone now. The roof looks good and the cleaned up and you wouldn't know they had been here."

"Repaired. We appreciate that MBG did not try and sell us a new roof. They are very professional. The roof is repaired. What more could you ask for. We will hire them again when needed."

"Matt recently did a metal roof on my house and shop, to replace the old, leaky, decrepit asphalt shingles...which I was having to patch pretty much every time it rained. When he came out for a quote, Matt was absolutely painstaking in his measurements (impressive...one of the reasons I went with him for my new roof). Matt provided three detailed quotes, with different options. Once we decided on a roof, he scheduled quickly. He and his crew showed up exactly when promised (early actually). Working from home that week, I was able to watch the process. Matt took the time to make sure everything was right. I had a few difficult valleys, and he was meticulous to ensure that everything would be watertight. All of the angles and lines are perfect. Matt is a craftsman, plain and simple. He and his crew take pride in their work, which is refreshing, this day and age. Last but certainly not least, Matt is courteous and professional at all times. He and his crew were a pleasure to work with. They left my house exactly the way they found it (only, with a great new roof)."

"Hixson Roofing did excellent work. Kyle came quickly and gave me a quote that was in line with Home Advisors estimates for the area. The crew was here on time and did not stop until they finished the job and cleaned the work area....no roofing nails found after they left! I would recommend Hixson Roofing and Kyle for any Roofing needs...professionals!"

"My husband and I recently noticed some damage to our roof that we attributed to natural causes such as wind and hail. A friend of ours had her roof replaced recently and we asked her for a referral. Her home is nearby and we couldn't help but notice how her yard was protected and how timely the job was done. We contacted Cornerstone and Troy immediately set up an appointment for his inspection. He met with our insurance company and was professional yet friendly. The Insurance company agreed with Troy and the project was underway. The job was completed in a timely manner, the workers were professional and overall it was a very good experience. Troy was easily accessible and knowledgeable. Any questions we had were answered intelligently and honestly. I have since recommended Cornerstone to friends interested in home exterior repairs.

Roofing questions, answered by experts

DIY is not recommended due to safety and expertise requirements. Professional installation ensures proper alignment and sealing.

You can replace a roof in the winter, though it’s not the most popular time to do so. The biggest drawback of winter roofing work is the weather. Snow and ice make for dangerous, slippery working conditions. Plus, shingles can only be installed in temperatures above 40 to 45 degrees.

The best time to replace a roof is in the spring or fall when the weather is mild. However, you can likely save some money by booking the job in the winter off-season, when roofers have more availability.

Your homeowners insurance premium may increase if you file a roof claim. Whether your rate goes up, and by how much, depends on several factors. These include your insurance company's policies, your personal claim history, the size of the current claim, and the type of damage. While a single claim after a long period without any may not trigger an increase, frequent claims are more likely to raise your premium. Additionally, insurers might increase rates at renewal due to external factors like changing weather patterns, which are beyond your control.

Spray foam roofs don’t stand up well to impact, so they won’t last as long as something like a tar and gravel roof and other flat roof materials in areas where extreme weather is common. Due to the reduced durability, you’ll also need more frequent maintenance and repairs for a spray foam roof, and those costs will add up over time. Spray foam roofs are relatively uncommon, so you may also struggle to hire a roofing contractor who can install one.

A roof's ability to handle snow depends on its strength and the snow's weight, as wet snow is much heavier than dry, fluffy snow. While designs in snowy regions often allow for 35 to 50 pounds per square foot, a general guideline is that a typical roof can withstand about four feet of fresh snow, two feet of packed snow, or just one inch of ice. Factors like the roof's age, slope, and support structure also affect its capacity; newer, sloped roofs generally hold more weight than older, flat ones. Ice and ice dams add significant, dangerous weight. Because capacity varies, it is best to contact a professional roofing contractor or the original builder to determine the maximum snow load for your specific home.
