"I haven?t used my chimney for a while, probably since I bought our house many years ago. With the recent ice storm in Greenville, I decided it was time to start using it again. I heard about George from a friend, who had a great experience with him. George came for a chimney inspection and afterwards cleaned the flue and repaired a few cracks in the fireplace. He also inspected the roof and chimney cap to make sure birds and bugs couldn?t get inside. My experience was excellent and I?m satisfied with the results. I highly recommend George with Vent Service Pro."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

A fireplace hearth is necessary in most areas per building codes, especially for gas and wood-burning fireplaces. Electric fireplaces may not require a hearth, so check local building codes or ask a pro for guidance if you’re leaning toward electric. A fireplace hearth can decrease the risk of flying embers creating a fire and burning your home down. That’s why fireproof material, like tile, is used for the hearth.

Fireplaces can theoretically help you save on heating bills if you lower the temperature throughout the rest of your home and heat only a single room that you occupy using the fireplace. However, in most cases, homeowners won’t save any money on heating bills. Gas and electric fireplace inserts could actually lead to a spike in your respective energy bills if you use them frequently, and if you don’t keep up with chimney maintenance and repairs, your traditional masonry fireplace could actually be a source of heat loss in the winter.

To ensure the safety and longevity of your pre-fabricated fireplace, perform regular maintenance. This includes regular cleaning, checking the unit for cracks, and ensuring the venting and ventilation systems are clear and functioning properly. Additionally, scheduling professional inspections helps ensure safe operation.

When your fireplace is not in use for longer periods of time, such as over the summer, you can keep smells at bay by spraying either a commercial fireplace deodorizing product or a blend of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water around the walls of the fireplace.

Or, you can place a container of charcoal inside the fireplace to absorb odors. Just be sure to remove it before it’s time to start using the fireplace again.

The disadvantages of a wood-burning stove include a slow heating time and the effort required for fuel. It can take about an hour for a cold stove to produce noticeable heat. Additionally, homeowners must source their own fuel by buying or chopping firewood, cutting it to the appropriate size, and storing it in a dry place. The fire also requires regular attention, as you'll need to add more logs throughout the day.
