"I haven?t used my chimney for a while, probably since I bought our house many years ago. With the recent ice storm in Greenville, I decided it was time to start using it again. I heard about George from a friend, who had a great experience with him. George came for a chimney inspection and afterwards cleaned the flue and repaired a few cracks in the fireplace. He also inspected the roof and chimney cap to make sure birds and bugs couldn?t get inside. My experience was excellent and I?m satisfied with the results. I highly recommend George with Vent Service Pro."

"One of the boots around a plumbing vent had a big hole in it and was leaking into my attic. He came out on a Saturday to inspect the roof and replaced the boot right then. I was impressed he came out on the weekend to take care of it. Will definitely call again when I have roof issues in the future."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Wood is classified as either hardwood or softwood. For firewood, hardwoods are generally the best choice as they tend to burn longer, hotter, and produce less smoke than softwoods. Recommended hardwoods include oak, hickory, maple, cherry, ash, beech, birch, elm, and walnut. Oak is a particularly good option as it's widely available, slow-burning, and doesn't produce much smoke or sparks. Some woods, like oak, hickory, and cherry, also emit a pleasant scent. It is best to avoid softwoods such as eucalyptus, poplar, and willow, as they create a lot of smoke and have a high moisture content that makes them difficult to light and burn efficiently.

Chimney crowns may be stone, concrete, or metal but most crowns are made of concrete. It’s not recommended to build chimney crowns with mortar (which is different from concrete) due to it’s weaker composition (especially when exposed to the outside elements). Most chimney crowns are custom made to fit your home’s specific chimney.

Most homeowners put a layer of compact sand or gravel at the bottom of their firepit, but you can also choose more decorative options like fire-resistant paving stones, bricks, or fire pit glass. Dirt by itself can even work, but other materials do a better job of spreading the heat around.

Sap, despite its stickiness, is primarily made of water and is responsible for wood being “green” when it’s first cut. Green wood doesn’t burn very easily and will snap and crackle a lot, not ideal for a fire pit or fireplace. That’s why it’s best to let fresh, sap-filled wood season or dry out for at least a season before you start burning.

Yes, you can use an existing chimney with a wood-burning stove if it meets specific requirements. The stove’s vent pipe size must be compatible with the size of your chimney flue. Your contractor can tell you whether your chimney is suitable for installation.
