"Seal on chimney flashing needed repair along with some shingles and other roof issues so I decided I needed a roofer. If I ever need work on my chimney I would definitely call Sweeps. They were here on time, very good communication, and went above and beyond explaining my issues that were causing a leak around fireplace."

"Following the storm I had serious concern that a damaged and rather large limb positioned over the main roof of my home could possibly break during the next storm. I found 'AAA" in the yellow pages (before I joined Angie's List). I contacted Brenda and explained what I needed done and asked for an estimate. I also asked her to have her insurance company fax a copy of their policy on 'AAA' directly to my office. I work out of town and made all of the arrangements by telephone. The estimate that she gave was very, very reasonable. Following the first estimate I attempted to change the scope of work somewhat. Brenda was at my home at that time so it was easy to convey to her what my change entailed. After some further discussion we agreed upon a new price for the work. The additional work that I wanted done was substantial. I asked her to give me a second estimate 'on the spot.' I judged the new price as fair consider the amount of work and time it would likely take. She had at least 5 men on the job, which began very soon after we agreed on the new price. Incidentally, I was very specific about how I wanted the cur would dropped in my yard. I wanted the wood for my fireplace. This was 'payback' for the damage to my porch roof that I incurred during the first storm. It took Brenda's crew roughly 3 hours and work was done. I spoke to my wife (who remained inside our home the entire time). She hardly noticed that they were above and around the house doing their work. I did instruct my wife to look at where the cut wood had been dropped and to make certain that nothing was damage during the work (such as: air conditioner, utility trailer and fence). Everything appeared to my wife to be fine. She then wrote a check for the job, at the agreed upon price and Brenda and her crew left the premises. My wife did say that there were 3 vehicles, one of which was a 'bucket' truck. (Incidentally, the truck was carefully driven over the front lawn and there was no damage done to any of our shrubs or rose bushes, etc.). I am a very satisfied customer. I called Brenda up and told her how pleased I was and mentioned that I would write a FAVORABLE review in Angie's List."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Completing gas log service ensures your fireplace is ready for unpredictable Columbia cold snaps. Properly tuned equipment improves indoor air quality and prevents dangerous gas incidents during heavy winter use. Over the long term, regular maintenance combats corrosion caused by high South Carolina humidity, extending the lifespan of your burner components. Documented service history also keeps your system compliant with building codes and protects your home resale value.

Helpful?

A major mistake homeowners make regarding gas log service is skipping required building permits for gas line modifications. Ignoring maintenance during the long Columbia off-season leads to dangerous insect nesting and severe component corrosion. Homeowners also dangerously assume natural gas and propane systems are interchangeable. Always hire a licensed professional for fuel conversions, and never attempt to operate an uninspected system after a local utility pressure interruption in South Carolina.

Helpful?

After completing fireplace service, obtain and retain all permit documentation for your records. Schedule annual inspections before the heating season to combat Columbia's humidity and storm exposure. Visually check your exterior masonry for white staining after summer rains, as this indicates water intrusion. If your project involved structural repairs, notify your homeowner's insurance provider. Finally, update your South Carolina property disclosure documentation to keep your service records current.

Helpful?

Gas log service requires an annual pre-season cleaning to remove dust and spider webs before the heating season begins. A licensed professional will inspect burner ports for insect nests, which create serious fire hazards. Because Columbia experiences high humidity, technicians check flexible gas connectors and burner grates for corrosion. They also test gas valves and inspect exterior vent caps for storm debris and animal nests to ensure safe operation.

Helpful?

When hiring a pro for fireplace service, verify their national certifications since South Carolina lacks state-level chimney licensing. Your contractor must understand Midlands-specific moisture issues like spalling brick and mortar erosion. They should also know local permit requirements and have experience with older housing stock common in Columbia. For gas systems, ensure they carry the proper gas credentials. Always confirm they hold active general liability and workers' compensation insurance.
