"Willy and his crew do excellent work. We have had them work on our property for 3 years doing a Spring cleanup, mulching, planting scrubs and bushes, refreshing and extending red stone, removing dead shrubs, safely killing weeds, putting new sand between our bricks in our front and rear large patios, and emptying and cleaning our pond. Willy’s pricing is fair and he is very knowledgeable of bushes, shrubs and correct placement and care. We very highly recommend Willy’s Landscaping."

"Jay and his company are awesome! They listened to what I wanted and designed and installed exactly what would deliver what I asked for (color and deer resistant). And Jay continues to visit me, to service my concerns on a couple of plants that did not take (live) after being planted in Oct. Very competitive pricing too!"

"Jim Rhoads, the owner came out promptly and explained every aspect of the job which included the removal of a very large cherry tree and flush cutting the stump as well as trimming the dead wood off a locust tree. He had a big crew of professionals who worked well as a team to get the job done meticulously. All of the wood and debris were hauled away leaving my yard looking absolutely beautiful. I was quoted a reasonable price for a job very well done. He is fully insured which is important in this line of work! I was extremely pleased with Tomahawk Tree Service and highly recommend them. I will definitely use them for any future tree service I may need."

"Edd and his crew did a SUPERIOR job removing two very large trees, one over 50 feet tall (and planting a much smaller tree in its place), and the other over 75 feet tall, all in the tight confines of a townhouse community. They were the hardest-working crew I've ever seen, all at a price nobody else would touch. My neighbors and I all enjoyed the show, wherein my one neighbor hired Edd on the spot to remove one of his trees. Their stump-grinding and cleanup was meticulous. These guys are artists, and are the last word in tree removal. I only wish I had more trees for them to remove!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Palm trees aren’t much different than your typical tree removal. Removing a palm tree is a standard procedure as long as pros have the proper tools and supplies. For DIYers, however, there are some risks associated with palm tree removal. Palm trees have spiky fronds, bark, and patches of hefty wood. So, it’s best to let an experienced tree service pro remove a palm tree.

You can use a chainsaw, but it won’t remove the entire stump or root ball and is not a recommended method. It takes quite a bit of physical work to achieve and will likely dull or ruin your chainsaw. Instead, consider using salt, herbicide, light deprivation, boiling water, stump grinding, or burning to kill a tree stump. These methods allow you to kill a stump using minimal machinery and physical exertion.

If you’re planning on keeping the tree, unless the roots are invasive, there’s no need to remove them, as doing so can cause damage to the tree. If the tree has been cut down and the stump and roots are left, grinding and removing the stump can cause root decay for some species. For other species, the stump and roots will need to be removed to prevent pests, disease, and possible tree regrowth.

Unfortunately, palm tree stumps are one of the most difficult types to remove due to how their roots grow. Unlike other trees, palm tree roots grow horizontally and vertically. Palm tree roots grow as deep as three feet into the ground, although soil and growing conditions could mean they go as far as 50 inches into the earth.

If you want to be able to repurpose the grass in the area where you removed a stump later, you’ll have to dig quite deep—and perhaps wide—to trim away all the roots.

You may be looking to identify maple trees to use for home improvement projects. In that case, you can tell hard maples by looking at their leaves. Leaves will have a U-shaped dip, or sinus, between the points, or lobes, of the leaves. Leaves of soft maples tend to have V-shaped sinuses.

If you already have the cut wood in front of you, look for a light, uniform color to identify hard maple wood and check for variations of red, gray, or brown streaks and an overall darker color in soft maple wood.
