"I had a 30 year old furnace on its last legs. Given I am someone who always does a lot of research before moving forward, I did some online research and besides the company that had been servicing my existing HVAC equipment giving me a quote, I contacted 5 other companies for bids on a new furnace and AC system. In my research, I read that the quality of the install is just as or more important than the brand of the equipment. And I definitely noticed a difference in the knowledge and expertise each company presented when I met with their company sales rep / estimators. I ended up with 7 quotes (one company quoted two different brands) but two reps really stood out from the rest with their knowledge. One was Lonnie Auten with Wade Heating & Cooling. Lonnie and a Trane rep were the only two who took the time to do calculations to ensure the system was properly sized (the others just looked at the size I was replacing and asked if I was happy with how it kept the temperature). Lonnie and the other gentleman were also the only two to notice a couple issues with the way our old company had installed a humidifier. In fact, even though I just had the furnace serviced a week prior and mentioned the humidifier was leaking – the old service tech did not fix it. Lonnie saw it was leaking, went out and grabbed a tool from his car and tried to figure out the issue to stop the leak. He discovered a slight crack in a supply hose and said he could have his techs fix it if they did the install (in the end I had them replace the entire humidifier). Lonnie and the other gentlemen were also the only two to talk about federal tax credits and to ensure the whole system was AHRI matched to qualify for those tax credits. They both took the time to answer all my questions I ended up with 2 quotes on Carrier, 2 on Bryant, 2 on Trane and 1 on Lennox equipment. While not the cheapest quote, the quotes provided by Lonnie and the one Trane rep were pretty competitive. I actually had a lower quote from another Carrier dealer, but I just felt much more comfortable that Wade would provide a higher level of installation and service so chose to move forward with them. My installation took place over two days and the two installers, Scott and Brandon were very professional, on time and did a great job. They asked me if I had any questions up front, told me what they would be doing that day, and kept me apprised calling me down when needed to ensure I was ok with a few placement decisions they had to make. They cleaned up everything, walked my wife and I through how to operate everything and made sure I was satisfied. Based on my experience, I would definitely recommend Wade to others. In fact, based on my interactions with Lonnie and before my install was done, I gave my daughter and her fiancé Wade’s name and number as they needed a pressure relief valve on a heating boiler in the house they just bought replaced and were not having any luck finding someone to service it in a timely manner. Wade was able to come out, order the part and plans to install it for them next week. Very happy with my experience."

"They were able to fit us in so we didn't have to do without heat. They replaced a part the same day I called in to hold us over so we had heat until they could replace the whole furnace 2 days later. The men were were very efficient and knowledgeable. We couldn't be more pleased and will be using them for other items when needed. The office staff was very courteous and made us feel well taken care of."

"I was impressed with the efficiency and craftsmanship with which they installed two mini-split air conditioners in my house. I plan on using them to design and install central air in an addition that I'm building to my house and would enthusiastically recommend Kad Heating and Cooling to anyone in need of a system!"

"Two gentlemen arrived right on time and, after taking the time to explain to me exactly what they would be doing, they proceeded to commence their initial inspection. After they had thoroughly evaluated the condition of our system, they went through and gave me the list of services included in the Angie's List deal I had purchased as well as some additional services that they would recommend based on what they observed. This included a walk-through of all of the areas and locations that they had evaluated. Although the cost of the additional services was more that I had originally planned on spending, I felt confident that their recommendations were based on knowledge and expertise from professionals who really knew their trade well. I am happy to report that we have already felt a difference in the performance of our heating/cooling system and can actually see the difference when looking into the vents. I had no idea how filthy they actually were! (Our townhouse had been sitting vacant for close to a year before we had moved in last summer.) The gentlemen performing the services were very friendly and professional. As I said, the initial service ended up being much more that I planned on spending; however, after seeing the mess that came out of my vents, seeing the nasty filter that they removed and being given a list of ways that we could maintain a clean system, I truly felt like we got our money's worth. We were told that, with proper maintenance, we would be able to get away with a much less expensive yearly general maintenance cleaning. I will definitely call them back when that time comes. Wonderful customer service!

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

If you go to turn it counterclockwise and it won’t turn anymore, it’s open. Like most other valves, you should be able to turn a radiator valve counterclockwise (to the left) to open it and clockwise (right) to close it. To close a radiator valve, turn it clockwise until you meet some resistance and can’t turn anymore, but do so carefully to avoid breaking the valve.

Chilled water HVAC systems use water instead of traditional components and refrigerants. They're more common in commercial settings than residential ones but are slowly being adopted by some homebuilders to cool homes. As the name implies, the system keeps the water chilled at 40 degrees and circulates it through water coils. The water absorbs the heat from your home and drains outdoors. Condo apartments are more likely to have chilled water HVAC than single-family homes because this system is designed to cool several rooms or large areas individually.

The cost-efficiency of baseboard heaters depends on the type and how you use them. Generally, standard electric baseboard heaters can be expensive to run because they use electric resistance heating, which is less energy-efficient than systems like forced-air or heat pumps. However, hydronic and gas versions are typically much cheaper to operate. Hydronic models are more energy-efficient because they heat a liquid that retains warmth longer, preventing the thermostat from turning on and off as often. The overall running cost is also influenced by local electricity rates, your home's insulation, and your usage habits. To increase efficiency, you can use baseboard heaters for zoning, meaning you only heat the specific rooms you are using.

Warmed or cooled air can escape your home through drafty windows and doors. If you notice any gaps, be sure to caulk and seal them. You can also hire a local pro for an energy audit to get a list of energy-saving recommendations.

Finally, check your insulation. It can settle in over time and become less effective. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that you can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs (or 11% of total energy costs) by sealing leaks and making sure attics, crawl spaces, and basements have a nice layer of insulation.

You can use a boiler and a furnace, although it’s not common to use both for whole-house heating. For example, your furnace may take care of HVAC heating through your vents, while a boiler powers your floor-based radiant heating in the bathrooms. Mixing and matching like this gives homeowners a variety of heating possibilities.
