It was clear that there was a blockage (wipes — don't flush them!!!) and that the house drain and curb trap were dislocated and would have to be dug up and replaced. For the immediate problem -- unblocking the drain temporarily so the house could be inhabited -- they offered a choice of the cheaper snaking and the more expensive hydrojet treatment, which they said would leave the pipe clean. Of course I took that. It didn't clear the drain and they didn't try the snake, saying that it wouldn't fit through from inside. I paid $563 for this failed job, figuring that the clog was impossible to clear. They said the $563 could be applied to the cost of digging up and rebuilding the drain and trap, and gave me an estimate for $13,000 emergency service (or $10,000 if I could wait until the next week). Thinking it could be worth another try, I called a local plumber, Goodman. They snaked it from the inside and unblocked the clog. They said it didn't make sense to jet first in my situation and explained why you would snake first and then escalate. They charged me $165, and also gave me an estimate for the repair job that was less than half of Zoom's. Though I didn't end up using them, it was at least in line with what I now know is the normal price. The application of the $563 to a $10,000 bill would still have been around $6000 too high! Now, I want to mention that the Zoom workers seemed very nice. Maybe they're just following instructions from the company. I just don't appreciate the practices of a business that seems to take advantage of the customer's desperation in an unfamiliar situation to upcharge them and overcharge them, at least judging by my experience.
