"JIm was AWESOME! Super responsive to text and phone calls and was sure to followup to ensure the work was completed to satisfaction. I would 100% recommend to anyone looking for any masonry work, specifically to repointing and chimney repair. His crew was clean and out of the way the entire time they were here and we're very attentive to our asks regarding our pets. 10/10 would recommend"

"I feel extremely lucky that I found Shane Moran Masonry via Facebook. I based my decision to reach out to him on the reviews that others had left, so I feel it important to return the favor. Shane's communications were prompt and friendly and he came out to my property to assess the work within a very reasonable time frame. That's hard to come by in this climate. I asked him to remove an existing window and replace it with a sizable door on the exterior of my stone house. When I tell you that it looks like the door was always there- I can't stress enough how great the work is! The job was done on schedule and I truly couldn't be happier. I have already referred him to a few friends looking for work. And now I'm referring him to you! Call Shane Moran today!"

Customers say: Quick response

"The owner is a good communicator. He keeps you informed of the date of the project or any changes. He describes what he intends to do and the options well. This was a replacement of brick which had been removed from a air condition placed in the wall. It was on the second floor."

"Rick Morrow called me as soon as I sent my inquiry. He came to give the estimate the following week and the job was completed the next day. His crew did a very good job repairing a porch wall that was sinking due to an improperly installed basement window. The repaired wall looks great. They matched the brick and the mortar colors and even filled in some other cracks that they noticed. The price was very competitive. The crew cleaned up after themselves. We are very satisfied with the job."

"Nick scheduled my job within a month of the original estimate. He and his crew did a terrific job. They do a lot of work in city neighborhoods and were able to deal with the complexities of working on a very busy Squirrel Hill street. They made fast progress and the driveway looks terrific. They came back after a month to seal it. I paid slightly more than the estimate from a competitor but once I met Nick, I knew that I could trust him. His company honored my Angie's List coupon."

"Mark is a chimney wizard! My chimney looks brand new. He replaced the crown, pretty much had to tear off and rebuild the top few rows of brick, replaced damaged bricks elsewhere, and repointed. His workmanship and pricing can’t be touched! He also took care in making sure the job site was left as it was when he started. I strongly recommend Mark for any of your masonry needs!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick and stone are durable, low-maintenance materials that offer excellent insulation, aesthetic appeal, and can increase property value.

While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.

Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.

Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

Brick stain doesn’t peel or chip and is much more durable than painting. That’s because the staining is absorbed into the brick instead of lingering on the surface as paint does. The color retains even under extreme weather conditions. Therefore, brick stain will save you a lot of time and cost on maintenance in the long run.

Common causes include weather exposure, moisture, and settling. Regular maintenance prevents significant damage.
