"I highly recommend Paragon Electric. Clint, the owner, was very responsive with calls and texts prior to the service call, and was thorough and knowledgeable. He explained his analysis of the electrical problem beautifully, answered questions and utilized his time well within the service call period, which included a run to a local store for an atypical breaker. Thanks Clint!"

Customers say: Terrific value

"We are renovating a former rental, and while replacing the electrical outlets and switches lost power to half the house.  We had used JM3 before and had a good experience, so we called late in the afternoon on a Thursday and made an appointment for 8:30 Monday morning. The technician rang the doorbell at 8:31. He quickly got to work checking all of the outlets and switches - whether we had changed them out or not. He madeaking corrections as he went. He even identified problems in places we hadn't worked on yet!

"Just purchased a new home and I had a dead short for the disposal. I was worried about the cost given the other renovation projects I have. I called and spoke to Troy and scheduled an appointment just a few days later. He arrived first thing in the morning as promised and was a complete professional. He had repairs completed within an hour and was super friendly and knowledgeable. I will not only call this company for any future electrical needs, but I will recommend them to anyone I know who needs an electrician."

"They determined it was not the dryer, but the electrical source. They thought maybe the circuit breaker, but it turned out to be the receptical for the plug. Great electrician recommended by them!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

It can be safe to buy or live in a house with knob and tube (K&T) wiring, but only if the system is in good condition, functional, and has been thoroughly inspected and approved by a licensed electrician. Never purchase a home with K&T wiring without getting a professional electrical inspection first.

Key considerations include:

  • Safety and Condition: An inspector will verify that the wiring is safe and has not deteriorated. Over time, the insulation can wear away, leaving exposed wires that pose a significant fire or shock hazard.

  • System Capacity: The electrical service should be at least 60 amps. However, even at this capacity, K&T systems often struggle to handle the demands of modern appliances and electronics.

  • Lack of Grounding: Knob and tube wiring is an ungrounded system, which is a safety concern for many modern devices.

  • Ongoing Maintenance: If you live in a home with K&T wiring, it's recommended to have it inspected by an electrician every one to two years to ensure it remains in safe working order.

Ultimately, any inspection or modification of a knob and tube system should always be performed by a certified professional.

Black is the standard color for hot wires, which transfer electricity to your outlets and switches. Red wires are also hot wires. White (and sometimes gray) wires are considered neutral, delivering power back to the panel. Finally, green wires, which are sometimes bare copper, are ground wires, used to ground an electrical circuit and prevent electrocution.

Incandescent lights are glass bulbs with metallic filaments inside, while LEDs feature “light emitting diodes” that illuminate when they come in contact with an electrical current. You can buy either for your Christmas lights, but note that LED lights are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan.

Automatic gates don’t use too much electricity, and you should see a minimal effect on your utility bill. In fact, certain gate systems are entirely self-sufficient and rely on solar panels attached to or near the gate to power the motor. While a gate is large and there is a powerful motor moving it, it’s not something that sees constant use throughout the day. For most automatic gates, expect to see a utility bill increase of only around $10 per month.

To ensure batteries stop charging when they’re full, you’ll need to install a charge controller that determines when the battery is full. Once the battery is fully charged, the charge controller will stop the energy flow or divert the energy to the grid or other appliances. Without a charge controller, the battery may continue to charge, which can lead to less productivity and potential damage.
