"Our electrician was prompt, communicative, and worked hard to resolve the problem with our doorbell, and was ultimately successful. We put in a fair amount of the effort, however, and overall we spent almost $600 for about 2.5 hours of time. That seems really high - enough that we will probably check with other contractors next time before automatically using Mr. Electric again."

"I called Distinct because we were having electrical outlet issues with our outdoor tv, and with a big event coming up we really wanted it working. Not only did they get back to me right away, they sent someone out before that event! He was professional and got right to work to fix the problem. We will definitely be calling Distinct for any future electrical needs!"

"Both Willy and Tyler were very professional and friendly. They did an excellent job in trying to get our business. Made us feel very comfortable and relaxed. Unfortunately, we couldn’t afford to purchase any services and do any business. But we totally would IfN we were able. Even the company management was trying to do all they could to earn our business. All in all very well done. Thank You all. Good Product, professional in dress and presentation. Very impressed!! "Did not install appliances, but rather trimmed our countertop so our refrigerator would fit. He did a good job, was very prompt and professional. We would be happy to have him back again and highly recommend his work and HomeAdvisor."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, blue wires can be hot wires in the U.S. However, they are less common in residential properties than red and black hot wires. Blue wires are typically used as traveler wires in three-way and four-way switches, as well as ceiling fans. They allow fixtures to be controlled by multiple switches, like when there are switches at the top and bottom of a staircase for the same light.

Like any other household appliance, electric fireplaces can wear out after about 10 to 20 years. With more frequent use, the parts will wear out quicker, and you may get just 7 to 10 years out of a well-loved electric fireplace. Fortunately, electric fireplaces come with a lower upfront installation cost compared to alternatives like gas, so you can install a replacement for less.

Yes, you can get shocked while using a multimeter if:

  • You touch the metal tip while testing a live current.

  • The meter isn’t properly rated for the voltage.

  • The meter picks up on transient voltage that’s above the range you’ve set.

  • The meter has defective parts.

You can prevent shock and personal injury by using a multimeter properly and maintaining your device.

If you’re unsure how to use a multimeter or want help with your project, contact a local electrician to get the job done.

Yes, in a new home, ground wires are mandatory. Some older homes may not be grounded, but if you decide to renovate, you will need to have your electricity grounded at that time. Remember, grounding helps keep everyone in your home safe from sudden electrical surges. It’s best to hire an electrician to inspect and work with your home’s wiring.

Outdoor outlets should be at least 15-amp, but preferably 20-amp. The exact rating will depend on the electrical load of the devices that will be plugged into the outlet and the capacity of the circuit. It's important not to overload the circuit, which can cause safety hazards such as tripped breakers or electrical fires. In general, a circuit rated for at least 20 amps is recommended for outdoor outlets, while each outlet should be rated for at least 15 amps.
