"Scott Paider of Western Edge Tree Service gave me a fair bid to cut down a very large tree in my yard that was rotting from the inside. He and his team cut down the large tree in one day and cleaned the site such that it appeared not to have ever existed. The job was done efficiently on the date promised for the cost estimated in the bid. I was very impressed and happy that I had contacted Scott Paider."

"This job was not easy as the tree to be removed growing very closely among homes & outbuildings. Mike & his crew did a superb job of maneuvering the gigantic lift in among other trees & obstacles in my small front yard. They worked very efficiently, professionally & quickly causing no damage to my home, yard or my neighbors yards & homes. They cleaned up my yard, hauled off debris plus sawed up large limbs & the large trunk into stove size for a low income recipient. They stayed on the time schedule & the cost estimate. I am beyond pleased!"

"Wade came out and removed a 75 ft douglas fir tree close to our front door. Did an absolutely great job. Would highly recommend him. Did everything you are supposed to for a customer and did it for a very fair price. friendly, courteous, knowledgeable, skilled and hard working. Should be called Paul Bunyan. He's got the skills."

"I am extremely happy with the service I received from Global Green Tree Service. The general manager, Allen Wilson, came out and gave me a free estimate on trimming two trees that hadn’t been trimmed in 12 years since my father passed. The price was very reasonable for what I wanted done. He came back the next morning and did a fantastic job. I am very pleased. He was very professional and courteous, showing his expertise in tree trimming and showing respect for what I told him about my dad’s work by doing it exactly the way my dad had always done it, especially since I had no knowledge of what needed to be done. I will be hiring him again once I’m ready for the landscaping of my front yard. My brother and neighbor commented on how well it was done."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Generally, homeowners do not need permission to cut down a tree on their own private property, but there are several exceptions where a permit may be required. You might need a permit if the tree is particularly large, old, or a protected species, such as a heritage tree. Trees located near public property or power lines can also be subject to special rules. Additionally, many local governments and homeowners associations (HOAs) have regulations controlling which trees can be removed to manage an area's appearance or prevent the spread of invasive species. To avoid hefty fines, it is crucial to check with your local government and HOA to determine if a permit is needed before you begin.

It is possible to cut down a tree on your property yourself, but it is generally not recommended unless specific conditions are met. You should only consider this project if the tree is small (e.g., under 4-5 inches in diameter and short enough that you don't need a ladder to reach the branches), and you are experienced in handling a chainsaw. The tree must also be located far from any power lines, fences, homes, or other structures. Even for small trees, the work can be dangerous, and it's always advisable to have a spotter to ensure the tree falls correctly and no branches fall on you.

For any tree that is large, requires a ladder to access, or is near electrical lines or structures, you should always hire a professional. Attempting to remove a large tree yourself is extremely dangerous, poses a risk of serious injury, and could result in significant damage to your property.

Before any tree removal, it's also important to check your local and state regulations to ensure the tree is not historic or otherwise protected by your city.

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.

Generally speaking, you’ll want to avoid flush cuts, which are cuts made as extremely close to the trunk or main branch. These cuts can weaken your tree, lower its natural defense mechanisms, and even cause decay. You’ll also want to avoid tree topping, which is the total removal of the leader and upper main branches of a tree.

Most pros will advise against either of these methods, which is why hiring a pro is often the best choice when it comes to tree trimming.

A general rule is that trees need 10 gallons of water for each inch of the tree’s diameter. For large trees, that can amount to approximately 160 gallons of water or more. Watering big trees to this extent can take quite a bit of time using a hose. For this reason, you may consider installing a soaker hose or sprinkler system to make the job easier.
