"My partner noticed that the water was cold when he went to add chemicals. I called Oregon Hot Tub Repair, as that is what kind of spa we have and for 2 calls they kept telling me to "burp" the tub, and gave me a laundry list of things to do in order to do that. I would call back to ensure that we were doing the right things and they never answered. So, I called Taylor/NW Spa Maintenance. He said he could be out the very next day! What a relief! He was GREAT!! He only spent something like 15-20 minutes and he diagnosed the problem immediately. A mother board. The Spa is 11 years old and I have not had a single problem with it. Taylor showed me the mother board and explained how that could happen: age/condensation. He will order another one and have it installed by the first of the week. He said the mother boards run about $350. Was very thankful he came out so quickly....the next day and that he was done in about 20 minutes. I will definitely hire him from now on for all my Hot Tub maintenance!"

"We have a home warranty to cover things that go out when needed. For our refrigerator, it went out and it was going to be about $2300 to replace the exact same model. Choice offered us $400 the 1st time and then and after looking at what type of model, they offered us $700. It was better than nothing but I assumed and thought that it would at least be enough to get the same exact kind of fridge we had in the 1st place . I was a little disappointed this time. in the past when we have use them to do our pool pump. They did replace the pool pump at the Cost and we did get the exact same thing that went out. Overall, Choice is pretty good."

"Cretec Concrete did a fantastic job replacing our pool deck. The existing concrete deck was built in 1960, and it had cracked and failed, was topped with indoor tile...in seriously bad shape. Spencer and his crew removed the demo'd materials quickly. There was some damage done to the underlying pool mechanical piping in the process (which should honestly be expected), but the crew replaced all the piping and stood by while we completed pressure testing. Whenever a new challenge came up, Cretec let me know right away, and we were able to calmly and professionally find a solution. They also formed and new steps for all our outside doors. Bottom line...These guys are professional, punctual, problem-solving, nice guys. I would hire them again and recommend them without hesitation."

"John does good work at a fair price. The gas valve went out on my Rheem and he found the part and repaired the next day. He also found a connector that was going bad. John takes pride in his work. I can recommend John with no reservations! Give him a call if you need HVAC repair."

"AHS is ok. They cover repairs of most everything under the roof of your house. The companies that contract with them are not always the best. You call AHS with the issue, they send a fax to the repair company and give you the contact info. If they don't contact you within 24 hours, you call them. Sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't. When they arrive (usually three days or so later), they service the item. if it has issues within the 90 days, you call AHS again, they are sent out with no charge. If the serviceman decides the unit is unrepairable, AHS will allow you to choose a replacement from their listing (usually not as good as what you have) they will install and remove your old item, or give you wholesale amount to buy and install your own. Prices vary on what you want covered and what you want the copay to be, plus where you live. For me it is 49.99 per month with a 75.00 time of service order. You can have more than one item serviced at the same time under the same fee. If you have a SEAR product the repair guys are great. Not that wild about the other ones they send out. But it is a big savings compared to calling someone on your own. The cost of service is only the 75.00 copay."

Pool and Spa Servicing questions, answered by experts

A compact unit designed for two to three people typically weighs approximately 500 pounds in its empty state. On the other hand, a larger hot tub meant for up to six people can weigh around 1,000 pounds when empty. Materials used also impact weight. Less expensive hot tubs are typically lighter because they are made of molded plastic or fiberglass.

To refill a hot tub after winter, start by opening up the tub and giving it a quick cleaning. If you use antifreeze, drain out the water then grab a hose and thoroughly clean the tub shell out, spraying water into each jet of the tub.

Reconnect the hot tub and turn the power back on. When it’s time to fill the tub again, insert the hose into the filter well (if available). Avoid trapping too much air in the water lines, which can cause the pump to lock up when it starts again. Add the necessary chemicals and start the heating process. It will take some time—most of a full day—for the water to heat up again.

Follow these general safety tips for spas and hot tubs:

  • Keep your exterior electrical receptacles covered and dry, especially around your hot tub and pool during periods of use.

  • Make sure you have a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) properly installed to ensure no one gets accidentally shocked or injured by electrocution.

  • Don’t use the hot tub or your pool during a thunderstorm.

  • Before using the hot tub, have a certified electrician thoroughly inspect your hot tub and its wiring to make sure you’re in full compliance with all applicable local building codes.

Hot tub heaters typically last seven to 10 years, though some might only last five years if not properly maintained. You can maximize your hot tub heater’s lifespan by ensuring the water’s pH level is properly balanced.

Hot tubs don’t necessarily add value to a home—but they don’t take it away either. It depends on the potential buyer. A well-landscaped in-ground hot tub is attractive to buyers who prioritize relaxation and fun. Others would rather not deal with the maintenance.
