"Hired them for a basic residential addition foundation job and they completely screwed up every step of the process. They don’t know how to read plans or pour straight out flat foundations. They don’t pay their subs which is coming back on us now. They won't respond to any communications. A lien has now been filed on the project because of their lack of payment. Shocked at their ineptitude. Very friendly people, but they should not be construction business owners."

A slab-on-grade or slab foundation is a great option in many areas—usually in warm or moderate climates—and has been a successful foundation style for many decades. Slab foundations don’t require excavation or concrete block wall construction, so they’re the least expensive foundation type. They’re also the fastest to construct and don’t have many issues with moisture or water intrusion. However, they don’t give you extra storage space or potential living space like a crawl space or basement would, and they’re not ideal in colder areas where utility lines can freeze and frost heave can cause major damage.

Although it is possible for a house to collapse from a sinking foundation, it will likely take many years, and signs of major issues will be apparent for a while. Homes on hillsides or in areas that experience frequent washouts are at a higher risk of collapse. Tree roots don’t necessarily break through concrete on their own, but they can certainly take advantage of existing cracks, even very small ones. It is important to determine the cause of cracking to rule out underlying foundation issues. If your tiles were not damaged due to dropped items, heavy loads, poor installation, or inferior tile quality, and the cracks are spreading throughout your flooring and not limited to just one area, you may be dealing with foundation problems. These can include drainage problems and even foundation failure, so it is vital to call a licensed contractor to assess the issue and ensure your foundation is safe.
