"Very pleased with the services performed. Everything was punctual, professional, and efficient from the inspection and estimate visit to the repair services. Workers were clean and careful around the property, and kept us informed of their progress. The work areas were picked up and cleaned after completion of the repairs. The new crown looks great and the we're happy to be using the fireplace again. All work included in the estimate was completed exactly as promised and we had no issues with anything needing to be redone or called back for completion. I'd highly recommend! Compared to another company we had provide an inspection and estimate, Moseley personnel were factual and informative in their assessment of the chimney condition and didn't use "scare tactics" and pressure. Moseley's pricing was the best as well."

"Coleton was great! We hadn’t used the fireplace since purchasing the house 18 mos. ago and he tested and cleaned everything, taught us how to use the fireplace, and was professional the entire time. He also answered a few questions for another home project. Great technician and service!"

"Were honest about determining our chimneys were clean and did not need swept ... Installed our chimney caps as requested and did some extra repair in the chimney tops for cash. Inspected both fireplaces and quoted some prices for repairing both, with most being new mortar or caulking on some deteriorated brick joints."

"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. Recommended and installed a stainless liner and cap for the furnace flue and a new damper on the fireplace flue. Their price was better than previous quotes and even set up a partial payment plan. I am very pleased with the work they did."

"I needed foundation repair, tuckpointing brick, and it was done in one day, plus I had a little work done in the basement. Very happy with the results, and the professional, personable staff, Scott and John, who did the job right. The cost was reasonable as well."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Common issues discovered during a chimney inspection or cleaning include creosote buildup, cracked liners, structural degeneration or masonry degradation, and obstructions such as blocked flues or animal nests. These issues are potential safety hazards that can lead to combustion problems or poor air quality if not addressed.

You can find replacement stove parts for popular brands at local hardware stores or major retailers. However, you might find the best deal by directly buying online from the manufacturer. While there are some universal parts, the manufacturer can also help you find parts that are specific to your stove’s make and model.

A hot fire alone will not remove significant creosote buildup and can be dangerous, as it risks causing a chimney fire. While the warmth from a fire can help loosen stuck tar, making treatments like creosote logs more effective, it is not a substitute for proper cleaning. For existing creosote, the safest and most effective method is to have your chimney professionally cleaned by a chimney sweep.

No, you should never leave a fireplace burning overnight or unattended during the day. While fireplaces are made to contain fires, fires can and do spread from fireplaces, so it’s crucial that you’re there to monitor them and put them out if needed. If you’re worried about putting out a fire before bed, stop feeding it fuel long before bedtime and actively put out the fire using your poker, a shovel, and some baking soda.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that chimneys and their associated elements like fireplaces, vents, or stoves should be cleaned at least once a year before the start of seasonal use. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a chimney should be cleaned when there is 1/8 inch of soot buildup. If there’s more than that, creosote—a flammable byproduct of burning wood—can form and increase the risk of a chimney fire.
