Like cars, the most expensive part of a dryer is any electrical component, specifically the control board. For newer dryers, this single part, excluding the labor required to replace it, can easily be worth more than half the price of a new unit. Make sure you check your plan however as some will only cover new appliances which can be aggravating, as new appliances usually come with their own product warranty, whereas the warranty for an older appliance may have long since expired. Check with your home warranty company to see if an old appliance is covered before calling a professional appliance repair person.

In most cases, the repair is worth the value as it should help maintain the life of the appliance for a longer period, and the repair should be a lower cost than replacing the entire unit. For example, if the cost to repair your refrigerator will be more than 50% of the cost to buy a new one, and it’s 10 years old or more, then it may not be worth repairing. 

If you burn popcorn or other food items in the microwave, the smell lingers for an uncomfortably long time. To get the burnt smell out of your microwave, remove any leftover burnt food debris and then heat 1 cup of water in a microwave-safe container for about three minutes. Next, clean the inside of the microwave with a soft microfiber cloth, water, and a small amount of dish soap. Dry and let the microwave air out for two to three hours.

The best time to buy a new appliance is when your current appliance breaks or you are doing a renovation. You could get a good deal on a new one. Retailers will often list these items on sale during major shopping holidays like Black Friday, Labor Day, etc. Another great time for an appliance upgrade or change is during a renovation. Not only will you be able to better match your appliance to your new style, but the contractor may be able to dispose of your old appliance for no fee.
