"Peter Grady inspected, assessed and repaired a cracked ceiling area one floor under a bathtub. He cut open a small area of the ceiling and inspected the effected area with both his hands and a camera for an active water leak. He assessed for moisture damage to the structure due to what was just a condensation build-up and determined that there was none. He then repaired the area with limestone plaster; he left a painted finish that matches the existing ceiling texture so that there is no evidence of the previous crack. He does a great job of tarping the living area and leaving a clean worksite. Peter does first rate work with great communication and professionalism. Highly recommended."

"We cannot say enough great things about Tristate Complete Home Repair! We just finished up a partial renovation of the interior of our Hoosier Homestead farmhouse, and Tristate did a fabulous job! The house had spent decades under the care of our aging parents, so it needed a lot of careful attention to update nearly everything without compromising the unique historical beauty of the house. Owner Tim of Tristate brought decades of renovation experience to our project, leading a crew of workers representing all the trades. This meant fewer delays and mistakes on our project. No regrets here. We look forward to future work from Tristate!"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

It’s not a good idea to plaster over broken plaster (unless by broken you’re referring to cracked, in which case that’s perfectly fine). However, broken plaster can be a sign of a larger underlying issue like foundation damage or severe damage to the lath holding up the plaster, so it’s worth investigating before you simply plaster on top of the damage.

You can skim coat plaster, but it’s better to repair the plaster itself. A skim coat is a thin coat of drywall joint compound spread over the surface of a wall. The result is a flat finish that looks pleasing, but part of the appeal of plaster is its imperfections and aesthetic. Skim coating is best when limited to drywall applications.

Plaster is a beautiful finish but is labor-intensive to install and remove. It’s vulnerable to cracking and more sensitive to moisture variance than drywall. Installing plaster on a new wall is an expensive process that can take days to weeks, depending on the scope. Removing a plaster wall can also be quite expensive and time-consuming.

Plaster that sags or bulges, shows extensive deep cracks, or is crumbling from water damage or simply time may need replacement. Plaster walls can look a little “worn” for a long time before they need replacing. The only real way to know if it needs a replacement is to hire a professional to assess the condition of the plaster.

Although they are used for similar tasks, spackle and joint compound are not the same. Joint compound, also known as drywall mud, consists of limestone and gypsum and is primarily used for large-scale projects like taping and finishing seams on new drywall. Spackle is composed of gypsum and binding agents, making it a thicker compound best suited for small wall repairs like filling nail holes or cracks, as it dries quickly and is easy to sand. For small repairs, either product can be suitable. However, you can use joint compound for small jobs in place of spackle, but you cannot use spackle for large-scale taping and mudding projects.
