While a traditional septic tank requires a leach field for wastewater disposal, it is possible to have a septic system without one. Some alternative systems, which are often used when there isn't enough space for a full-size leach field, include mound systems or sand filtration systems. If you anticipate having high water usage in the future, it’s often better to drill slightly deeper and give yourself a bit more water storage than you need.

Neither system is necessarily better or worse than the other, but one of the two might be better for your needs. For example, anaerobic systems are less expensive than aerobic ones and don’t use power to run. On the other hand, aerobic septic systems don’t take up as much space and are typically more efficient than their anaerobic counterparts.

Depending on the size and location of your septic tank repair job, you may want to let the septic pros finish before tackling other backyard work.
