Rain One, Inc. was founded in 1991 and began with only a few employees. Through hard work, late nights and perserverance, the company has grown to more than 20 employees and thousands of customers currently. The family bond of the employees at Rain One is nearly as strong as their customer's attitudes and faith when entrusting the company to do work for them on an annual basis. No extra charge for after hours emergency service. Additional contact: Jeff Schmidt (614-419-3501). Accepts John Deere Credit.

"Fantastic job by Rain One. I had to have all new pipes put in from my house to the street. There were numerous bushes and plants to navigate but they did a fantastic job. They also use a sod machine so that when they are finished they can put the grass back and you don't have big lines of dirt. My neighbor recently had the same work done by another contractor and they didn't do this so they had to patch the grass and it looked bad all summer. Their crew also worked very hard and was very polite. I highly recommend Rain One."

"We had trees trimmed a couple of years ago. While the company was trimming my trees, they smashed my AC unit. They agreed to replace it. They learned they had to replace our furnace and our AC at the same time because of the set up. It cost us an extra $4,000 dollars (on top of the $3,000 we spent on service). They had someone named Rick install our furnace. Ever since it’s been installed, it makes loud noises whenever it turns on. Rick has stated he would come back for over A YEAR to fix it and hasn’t come. Jobie at JTS has not responded to any of our messages. It’s been long enough without a resolution and we’re getting ready to pursue other avenues to have this situation resolved. Would not recommend this company because if something goes wrong, it’s not guaranteed to be fixed. We trusted them to make this right. Very disappointing."

"DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR BED BUGS. I bought a house not knowing it had bed bugs. I wanted to treat ASAP so I could move in. The website says that they have chemical and heat options for the treatment of bed bugs and that they will inspect and make a recommendation based on the circumstances. This is false. They do NOT have heat treatment. The receptionist said that the chemical treatment should be good enough and that heat treatment is really expensive. What she did not mention is that chemical treatment does not solve the problem because it does not kill the eggs. I was not informed of this until after they had taken my payment and started treating. I asked how many treatments I will need and how long it will be before I can move my stuff in. The receptionist said the technician will make recommendations after he is finished. I was told the exterminator would let me know what he found. The only information I received was on the back of my receipt, which said “Bugs found. Treated.” They have a “text us” option on their web site. I was at work and could not talk on the phone, so I texted the number asking for clarification and a plan to exterminate the issue completely. I never received a text back or a call back. When at the house 2 days after treatment, I found a live bed bug. I hired a different company to heat treat, which immediately solves the issue because it kills bed bugs in all stages of life. The other company even has a 90 day warranty. The chemical treatment cost me $350, and the heat treatment cost me $1,350. But with needing multiple treatments, the chemical treatment would probably have cost the same or even more. And that doesn’t include having to pay at least an extra month of rent on top of my mortgage because I don’t want to move all of my belongings in to a house with bed bugs. I wasted $350 on something that didn’t work. Learn from my mistake."

"Extremely unprofessional company. I worked here for a few years and we cut corners as much as possible and they up charged everything a crap ton. We would take a $2 sprinkler that a customer could dig up screw off and the new on on in a matter of minutes $40 and recomend things be done the most expensive way possible even if it could simply be fixed instead of replaced. They treat their employees good when they want and very poorly when they want. If customers would see first hand how we did things they would move on to the next company. As a lot of our customers did or would ask to contact my self personally because they hated dealing with our office due to how unprofessional they always are. All in all I'd say we are no where near a lot of the other competitors and would recommend you move on to a better rated company up the list. Just my personal opinion."

"It is with a very heavy heart that I share this as I have shopped at Oakland Nursery for over 10 years and used various services including over $20K of work. Last year, I hired them for irrigation and sprinklers. The manager of irrigation left last fall for Colorado in the middle of my job. He had hired a sub to do it and I have had so many problems: left holes for kids to trip in, pummeled my fence, flooded my basement, planting grass in the wrong place, left a swamp. Although that sub is no longer there, they never hired another head of irrigation. They just used a guy that used to work for the previous head of irrigation (John). In order to solve the swamp issue, he sent a guy that wasn't a landscaper to dig up my sod and put dirt underneath. The previous head had recommended this in April but it wasn't done until months later, when the sun was too hot. It was a disaster and left a hazard as the grass was dying and pulling apart leaving large crevices. My daughter and I both twisted our ankles trying to get to the other side of the yard to water the veggies. They came and put hazard tape all around, ran my sprinklers around the clock and said no one could step on it for 4-6 weeks. I was left with almost half of my backyard that was unusable for a family reunion and two birthday parties. This was very costly to my family in the midst of COVID as we were planning to have these parties in the back yard. (They had also done 10K of work before this to plant a beautiful flower bed at the back of my yard that could no longer be seen because of the bright yellow hazard tape and tall weeds. They told me it couldn't even be mowed. I would have never consented to this if they told me it couldn't be walked on or mowed. When it was mowed 7 weeks later, there were holes, dead grass and a lot of bumps. They still haven't fixed this or even sent a boss to look at it. They send me bills with finance charges even though I paid before it was done. I already paid them $4100 for this service and they are charing me over $2K more b/c the head of irrigation did not put in writing what was a verbal agreement. There is no signed contract. I understand this is my fault but I trusted Oakland Nursery and John, the previous head of irrigation. This has been the worst professional experience of my life. I will no longer be using them and am hiring another company to fix it. I also have a lawyer who will now be communicating with them. My next email is to the Better Business bureau. I have never sued another company in my life, but sadly this is my next step if they continue to send me bills and don't correct the problems."

Lawn Fertilization and Treatment questions, answered by experts

Technically, yes—and you may have some successful growth—but this isn’t the ideal way to fill in sparse areas. By clearing leaves and debris, amending the soil, and aerating it properly before you lay the seeds, you’re providing the most ideal conditions for them to germinate.

There are plenty of products to help green up your grass. Try an iron supplement spray or fertilizer that is rich in nitrogen. You can also apply a thin layer of compost on top of your lawn at the beginning of spring to give the grass a nutrition boost, which helps it achieve that bright color you are looking for.

The best fertilizer for thick Bermuda grass is an organic fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio high in nitrogen, low in phosphorus, and low in potassium. Organic fertilizers help Bermuda grass grow stronger and healthier by retaining water well, supporting microbiome life, and promoting long-term soil health. However, this type of fertilizer is more expensive than synthetic fertilizers.

If you notice your grass is growing quickly and it’s hard to keep up, cut down on how much you water and fertilize it. Another helpful method is to mow the grass at the highest setting your mower will allow. Mowing at a higher setting slows grass growth since the blades won’t need to repair themselves as quickly if they’re kept at a longer length.

One of the most effective ways to improve lawn absorption is to learn how to aerate your lawn. This is a process where you poke tiny holes all throughout it to break up tough soil and sediment, creating pathways for sunlight, water, air, and nutrients to seep into the plant’s roots. In turn, it promotes stronger root systems, making your lawn or plants less susceptible to pests and disease. Ideally, you’ll want to aerate your lawn at least once per year during the growing season—think late summer to early fall.
