After completing the form online, John called me and quoted me $470 to clean my vents and said he had a cancellation and could do it that day. I am 73 years old and recently lost all my investments and had to sell my home to survive. I am a smoker, and after being told by numerous buyers, the house was perfect except for the smoke smell. I was desperate to try anything. I met him at the house at noon. His only equipment was a shop vac. Before he started, we went to the basement to check the furnace. He pulled it out of the filter, and it was clean. I had just changed it. Then he proceeded to explain that if I didnt have the ducts cleaned also, cleaning the vents would be of no value in getting rid of the smoke smell in the house. The price went to $966. He said he would start upstairs. In less than five minutes, he was back down, said he was done upstairs, and stated, You are not going to like this;. He showed me a picture on his phone and said there was mold in my upstairs vents. Said he would keep going, but if there was mold in any more vents, he recommended having the mold treated for another $1600. Of course, he said there was mold in all the vents and ducts. He showed me numerous photos of mold and rust. At this time, he informed me he did not accept credit cards, which he should have stated in the initial phone call. I had to leave to get him a check. When I returned, he was standing in the kitchen talking with my realtor and contractor. They both advised me not to have the mold treated and were skeptical that his only equipment was a shop vac. I have approximately 20 vents, 4 cold air returns, and ducts that run the entire length of my home. In less than an hour, he supposedly cleaned these items with his shop vac and took pictures of the inside of the ducts with his cell phone. After showing me more photos of the inside of ducts, I asked him to send me those pictures. He stated he couldnt. Ive never seen a cell phone that could take pictures 50 feet down a duct and cant be forwarded to another phone. Some of the pictures, the vents were silver, like mine; others were white. Leading me to believe these were pre-taken pictures and not even my vents and ducts. My realtor, contractor, and I all noticed he drove a large white van, which was empty, Zero equipment, but a shop vac. At the beginning of his evaluation, when he pulled out the filter, he said When I am done, this filter will be totally black from all the dirt I will be pushing down. When he was done, I said, Lets go check the filter again and see if it is black. He stated,We cant, I already vacuumed it off. I checked it on my own, and it was the same white filter from before he started. By this time, he was getting testy, as was I. He told me to make the check out to his girlfriend, Brandi McCoy. I feel this was a total scam. $1,000, I have gone with nothing to show for it. I was going to stop payment on the check immediately, but was advised not to do so. If someone would go to these lengths to con a senior, who knows what they would do to retaliate? I was so shocked I couldnt even cry.
