"It was great. Josh Betts returned my call first thing the next morning, and he was at the property quickly (and on a Sunday). Josh was right on time for the walk-through with our contractor. We had the repair plans the following afternoon. Josh is clearly very knowledgeable. I would recommend Betts Structural with absolutely no hesitation."

"This contractor came promptly to quote the job, however, his terms were not consistent with Ohio requirements. He wanted us to sign a contract which would give him 50% down. Contractors in our state should be asking no more than 10%. They have been in business for 5 years...we are concerned they have a cash flow problem. They are on hold. We are looking at other contractors."

"I had Brick Boys Masonry handle tuckpointing on my property, and I’m beyond impressed. Nick was professional, knowledgeable, and meticulous—he really knows his craft. He took the time to ensure every joint looked perfect, and the finished brickwork looks amazing. He was reliable, communicated clearly, and made the whole process easy and stress-free. I can’t recommend and Brick Boys Masonry enough for anyone needing quality masonry work!"

You can use a regular drill to make pilot holes for gutter brackets in the wooden fascia board around the top of your house, but it’s not the best tool for brick. Instead, you’ll need a heavy-duty power tool like a hammer drill with a carbide tip bit.

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.

You should generally drill into the mortar joints when installing shutters on brick. Mortar is softer, which makes drilling easier and puts less strain on your tools. It also lowers the risk of cracking a brick—something that’s a lot harder to fix. Mortar holds fasteners well enough for standard shutters, and if you ever need to patch the holes later, it’s a much simpler job than dealing with damaged brick. Just keep in mind that if your mortar joints are too thin or the hardware calls for brick anchoring, you'll need to check the manufacturer’s recommendations and adjust accordingly.

There are many things to look for when buying a brick house. Here are some of the key things you should pay close attention to.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.

A chimney cleaning brick or log can help loosen creosote between professional chimney cleaning appointments. Although they can help keep your chimney cleaner, they are not a substitute for chimney sweeping and are not meant to be used regularly.
