"Our experience with Logan Services was very disappointing. I told Andy (the Logan salesperson) in person and in writing that we would like to keep our analog thermostat, instead of getting a new, smart thermostat (we already have a smart thermostat for an existing system, and we prefer the analog functionality). He said of course. On installation day, the installer informed me that the new system required a smart thermostat. So we had to accept a new, smart thermostat. The detailed quote Andy provided for the replacement of our A/C and heating units included a manufacturer rebate and tax credit that would be refunded to us after the installation. The system we selected would be eligible for a $1400 rebate and a $1200 tax credit on our 2024 return. Three days after our installation, the Logan office called to follow up on the new system. I asked at that time how I could claim the manufacturer's rebate, because there wasn't a form or application in any of the paperwork I received. I was told that Logan would apply for the rebate and I should receive it in 6-8 weeks. It is now more than 8 weeks later, and I have not received anything from Trane. Now Logan claims that the rebate must have already been applied to the cost of our system. This is not true. The price Logan quoted remained the same from the original quote to the final invoice, and it did not include a deduction for a rebate. I do not recommend doing business with Logan."

"AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I had a terrible experience with Smith Mechanical Company. They were sent to inspect a sink faucet leak through my home warranty company. They looked at the sink for less than 10 minutes and deemed the leak was an issue with the dishwasher hose and made a note in the report submitted to the home warranty company as "dishwasher hose not installed correctly". We had a dishwasher repairman sent out later that week. He did a much more diligent review and inspection and ran 2 drain cycles on the dishwasher and confirmed with me watching that the dishwasher hose or any dishwasher components were NOT the source of the leak. He showed me the leak coming from the faucet itself. My home warranty company will not re-send out a service provider to fix the faucet leak because of Smith Mechanical's note about the dishwasher hose. I called Smith Mechanical to politely let them know that in the future they should not write down statements like "dishwasher hose not installed correctly" without properly confirming this, because that note caused me to waste $275 and still have a leaking faucet. When I tried to provide that feedback the Smith Mechanical employee hung up on me. I will never work with this company again and will never advise this company to anyone."

The average cost to install a new water heater is around $1,300, but you can expect to pay between $875 and $1,750, depending on the kind of water heater, the size of the unit, and the professional chosen to complete the work. Tankless water heaters can push your price higher, as installation is more complicated, with prices as high as $3,500. The location and accessibility of your water heater will play a role in the project cost, as those sitting in tight spaces like a crawl space will drive up your labor costs.
Tankless water heaters are more expensive than those with a storage tank, but they come with some impressive benefits that most homeowners find worth the higher investment. Most importantly, they provide unlimited hot water, so you’ll never run out like you would with a storage tank. Tankless heaters are also more efficient, so comparing gallon-for-gallon, you’ll spend less on hot water with a tankless heater. Tankless water heaters are also smaller, require less maintenance, and tend to last longer than storage tank water heaters.
It usually takes a professional water heater installer between two and three hours to remove an existing water heater and install a new tank heater. However, it could take four to five hours if they have to work in a small utility closet or another tight area, like a crawl space. Tankless water heaters have a more complicated installation process, so they will take a bit longer. Additionally, a gas water heater requires a connection to a gas line, and that alone can add about an hour to the installation timeline compared to installing an electric water heater.
It is very difficult and dangerous to install your own water heater, so we strongly recommend against tackling this as a DIY project. Not only will you need to wire your water heater, but you’ll also need to connect plumbing to the intake and outlet. Sweating copper pipes and connecting wiring properly are skills most DIYers don’t have, and even if you do feel confident you can do it, working with water and electricity always leaves the potential for electrocution. Hiring a local water heater installer is well worth the investment.
In most municipalities, a license is not mandatory for water heater installation or replacement. However, we strongly recommend hiring a licensed plumber or water heater installer to handle the work. Licensed installers are far less likely to make a mistake during the installation, which means paying for the experience decreases your risk of a leak and other issues. You can use our state licensing tool to find out if a contractor you’re considering in your area holds a plumber’s license.
