"It went okay, except for three problems. One window had been measured incorrectly and had to be completed at a later time. Another window was not measured or replaced, despite reminding them that it still needed to be done. Finally, they broke a sliding glass door insert and didn't completely clean it up. I had to call them back to do it properly, and when they came, they had a bad attitude about it."

"The installation team arrived promptly at 9am to begin work.  The installation team had the old window out and surface prepared within a the first half hour.  When the second truck arrived with the glass block panels the group installed the window.  There was a bit of a challenge with the vertical angle of the wall and one of the panels fell out on to soft dirt while being shimmed into place.  These guys are excellent bricklayers, and not only can you not tell where the vertical joints are between the panels, you cannot tell where they had to reset the rows as well.  Long story short, they did a terrific job, the window looks like one unit and the side of the garage looks great.  The total time for the job, arrival to departure was 2 hours.  The installation crew was professional and cleaned up the area leaving nothing behind.  The Ice pattern allows for the security and privacy we wanted AND allows a significant amount of daylight into the garage.  I will use Global Glass Block on my next glass block project.

"Our experience with Dan and Zen Windows was positive and stress free from the very beginning! As others have said, Dan was able to give us an excellent quote after a short phone conversation by asking us a few questions and viewing our home through online maps. Once actual measurements were taken, and a little tweaking of the quote due to the location and size of our windows, our windows were ordered. We only had to wait a few short weeks for the installation. The crew of 2 got all 25 new windows installed in just 2 days! They were prompt, efficient, professional and friendly. We love the quality and ease of use of our new windows! We highly recommend Zen Windows!"

"The windows were double pane windows and there was clear vinyl in between the glass with UV protection. These windows were very quiet and we could not hear anything outside. They did a nice job with the installation and their prices were great. They worked well and did a really great job."

"

They gave me what they thought of the assessment. I didn't follow up on it, it was just an audit and I heard what he had to say. He presented what he thought needed to be done and he said there needs to be a more thorough search of the upstairs and at that point I didn't go further with it.

"Bob was professional from the start - made an appointment and kept to it. He also did not try to sell a new roof when one was not warranted. He helped to educate us on what was wrong with clear drawings and explanations of what was likely happening. Given our location and other status, Bob was going to call us back with an estimate later. By the time he had called back, we had had another vendor already do a quick repair (in one of the locations that Bob had already noted), so at this point, we did not go need to go back to Bob, but if we ever do need a full roof done, I wouldn't hesitate to use his company.

"Quick Summary:
Mr. Siders did what he said he was going to do.  He did it on time and within the budget that he proposed.  He communicated well during the entire process.  The finished product worked without fault and looked great.  Absolute Kitchens and Baths has my unqualified recommendation.
Details:
Mr. Siders came on site and provided an estimate for the work to be done (remove old cast iron bath tub and convert to a walk-in shower for a first floor bath) within one week of being contacted about the work.  He arranged a mutually convenient time in the early evening.  He brought a number of catalogs with him as well as photos of his past work.  He thoroughly explained what he would do (in detail including the type of drywall he would use, how it would be taped, primed and finished).  The plumbing in the house was all copper and he explained that he would replace the copper from the shut-off valves in the basement (and install new  shut-off valves) up to the bathroom.  He also explained that he would replace the exterior wall insulation (which was blown-in) with new insulation and a vapor barrier.
We received a in initial written estimate within the week.  The family discussed various options (styles of glass, types of fixtures, colors, etc).  We wanted a slightly different combination of accessories from what we originally discussed.  Mr. Siders went back to the manufacturer and verified which options were available and compatible with each other.  I usually emailed Mr. Siders and he normally responded by calling me the next day (even on the weekends).  He was able to get the style of glass for the shower doors desired by my mother.  We added grab bars and a hand shower to the original estimate.  Once we confirmed the details, he had a written estimate emailed back to me within a day.  His proposal included good quality Delta plumbing fixtures (not some of the cheaper products found in the big box stores).  The prices he charged for the additional fixtures that
we requested were inline with the best prices that I could find for the parts online.
Mr. Siders was booked for two months our when we signed the proposal but he started within a few days of the original estimated starting time.  His original estimate was for three full days of work and then several partial days for the finish work as he had to wait for plaster/mud primer to dry.  His estimate was again very accurate and allowed my mother to plan around the
renovation activities.  When the work began, he took precautions against damaging the floor by putting down floor protecting boards.  He cleaned up after himself each day and a more thorough cleanup once the project was completed.
As with any renovation in an older home, one runs into unexpected issues. This project was no different.  Mr. Siders dealt with each issue as it arose.  One issue was that the new shower had a much larger drain which was unfortunately located in such a way that it ran into one of the floor joists.  He contacted a local plumbing supply and got an offset floor drain to remedy the problem.  When it came time to put the finishing coat of paint on, it became apparent that even with the same color paint that matching the colors between the new and old paint would be an issue.  To make it look right, he washed all the walls in the bathroom and then primed and painted the entire room.  The final paint was to be provided by us (it was custom color that my mother wanted from Sherwin Williams).  Mr. Siders again worked with my mother so that she could wait a day to purchase the paint when it was on sale.  Mr. Siders did not charge (nor even discuss additional charges) for these issues or services.  It is apparent that he takes pride in making his jobs turn out right and look professionally done.
The bottom line is that Mr. Siders did what he said he was going to do.  He did it on time and within the budget in his proposal.  He communicated well during the entire process.  I never waited more than 24 hours (including weekends) to get my questions answered.  He explained to my mother what was going on each day during the construction.  He protected the house from damage during construction and cleaned up after himself.  The finished product worked without fault (no leaks) and looked like it had always been installed (rather than a new installation) to the point that my mother said that the bathroom hadn't looked as good since it was brand new (more than fifty years ago).

"Teppo Interiors delivered a flawless project, at a fair
price, and ahead of schedule.  After
years of searching,  my family has
finally found the right home remodeling company.  Thanks to Kevin Teppo?s precision and
expertise, I plan to partner with his firm next summer on my kitchen
?redo?.   As time and money permits, I
will be remodeling my entire 1948 Bay Village home with Kevin as my general
contractor.
This year?s project included the family room in which Teppo
Interior repaired the drywall, painted the accent wall, layed tile and grouted
two entry ways into the room, and
carpeted the main floor space.
Additionally, Teppo repaired drywall cracks and imperfections in a bathroom,
hallway, and bedroom.  All the repaired
walls were painted and the new carpeting was laid down the hallway and into two
bedrooms.
Kevin as owner and project manager closely supervised the
progress of the job.  He and I partnered
as quality inspectors and it was Kevin who
would find minor areas for his team to perfect.  Specifically, Kevin directed his workmen to
insure smooth, even drywall in tricky areas and directed that any imperfections
in the paint be addressed immediately.
As the project unfolded, I made a number of changes to the
original scope of the project.  For example,
after one of the bedrooms was painted according to my specifications, I decided
I wanted the floor boards and trim painted in a bright white for contrast.  Not only was Kevin patient in discussing the
changes with me, he implemented the changes and kept on schedule.  As the work shaped up and I found new and
better add-ons to my rooms (like painting the trim on sliding doors, carpeting
a second bedroom, and muddying the bathroom door), Kevin and I worked together
on the budget so that I was always sure that the extras would be
affordable.  This I really appreciated as
the final project was considerably more extensive than originally planned but
there were no surprises for me at the final project cost.
Kevin did surprise my husband and me with his attention to
detail and his intensive knowledge of the intricacies of every aspect of the
work.  For example, the berber carpet was
laid so that the grooves were running horizontally.  The carpet flows seamlessly from the main
hallway into both of the bedrooms.  This
obviously adds to the beauty of the finished product, and it was a
sophisticated approach to laying carpet which I so appreciate.
The tiled two stairs from the great room into the kitchen
turned out beautifully.  Kevin took my
vision of using a vinyl product (a look alike for ceramic tile) and turned the
steps into a visual  destination
point.   The steps (like the two entry
ways) are grouted to fool the eye into seeing ceramic tile.  The sides of the steps are trimmed in a
transition wood product which Kevin stained to pick up the goldish tones in the
Sand One paint and off white berber carpeting.
The result is beautiful, functional and unique.
I would highly recommend Teppo Interiors be included in any
quotation process for interior design, remodeling and/or renovation.  Homeowners can expect to meet a true
professional who can help them with any aspect of home improvement.  Certainly, I intend to use Teppo Interiors exclusively
in the years ahead.

Glass Block questions, answered by experts

DIY is possible for small projects, but professional installation ensures proper sealing, structural integrity, and a precise finish.

You can still see vaguely into some types of glass block windows at night. Although there won’t be clear definitions, passersby may still see shapes, shadows, and movement through the glass. If you want complete privacy, consider installing diamond glass block windows rather than the typical clear or wavy glass blocks.

Glass block mortar is the best choice for glass block window units. It is specifically formulated for glass block window installation. Glass block mortar is usually a mixture of Portland cement, sand, and special chemicals. It is a white mortar that is applicable inside and outside your home. Do not use regular tile mortar because it may not have the binding strength and flexibility required for glass block windows.

Installing glass block windows has benefits and disadvantages, as with most materials. The pros and cons can vary depending on the type of glass block and the window location.

Pros

  • Maintains privacy while letting light into the bathroom

  • Energy efficient

  • Sealed to prevent drafts

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Strong and secure

Cons

  • Costly to install

  • Challenging installation

  • Challenging repair

Glass block installation can be relatively expensive due to the range of material costs and the labor time to assemble this type of specialty window. The process proceeds slowly as the glass does not absorb moisture from mortar and silicone caulk takes longer to harden, leaving spacers to hold up the structure until the caulk or mortar begins to cure. Plus, if your current windows have structural issues or damage, you’ll need to repair them before beginning the project, increasing your bottom line.
