"Electrical work was done well in advance of the roofing job.  Electrician returned at the end of the ice melting cable installation job to make an alteration to the outlets which was a decision made during the roofing and installation job.  Electrician was very neat and accomodating.

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

To ensure your generator installation lasts, account for Oneonta freeze-thaw cycles that shift concrete pads over time. Install protective housing to shield the unit from heavy snow and ice falling off steep roofs. You must also select a properly sized propane tank to guarantee reliable starts during extreme cold snaps. Finally, ensure your contractor installs an automatic transfer switch sealed against high humidity and precipitation to prevent moisture damage.

Helpful?

A permanent generator installation acts as a major selling point for buyers relocating to the region. Since rural infrastructure remains vulnerable to extended winter outages, backup power provides essential peace of mind. In NY, a hardwired unit counts as a permanent fixture that transfers with the property. While it guarantees a faster sale and reduces buyer negotiation, you must retain all permit documentation to prove code compliance.

Helpful?

A standard generator installation takes three to six weeks from pulling permits to final inspection. The physical labor requires one to four days, depending on whether you need new propane lines or trenching through rocky NY soils. Expect longer timelines during winter months when frozen ground prevents digging. Post-storm demand surges also extend wait times, so start your project well before severe weather arrives to secure prompt service.

Helpful?

Inspect your equipment for shifted or cracked concrete pads caused by Oneonta freeze-thaw cycles. Look for rust on electrical conduits and damaged enclosures from heavy ice accumulation. You should also check for missing permit records, improper property line setbacks, or exposed buried propane lines. If the system fails to start during utility outages or repeatedly trips breakers, hire a local professional to assess and correct the original generator installation.

Helpful?

Hire licensed professionals who understand local building codes and utility interconnection requirements. Your contractor must possess deep experience navigating rocky Oneonta soils for trenching fuel lines. Verify they carry proper liability coverage, especially when working around outdated wiring in older homes. Ask for references from recent projects in the Catskill region to confirm their expertise with local climate demands, severe winter weather, and strict state propane regulations.
