"Empire Plumbing and Drain is Top Notch. We were in distress with our plumbing. Anthony was professional and friendly on the phone, listening and asking questions to understand our situation. On time, friendly and respectful of the home. He diagnosed the problem and Clearly explained Exactly what he would do to fix it. He showed up on time first thing in the morning with his powerful equipment and really worked at the problem. He Fixed It! All that for a reasonable price. 🙏🏼 Feels great to have a knowledgeable, competent, courteous plumber who communicates with us and treat us and our home respectfully. Thank You Empire. Definitely recommended."

"TOP NOTCH COMPANY !! The team arrive on time-- I have to mention these wonderful men --Ian Dan-Jaquan--because they were so professional !-( I did not find out the name of the delivery guy who delivered all the units--He was excellent too ) They worked non stop ! They were extremely polite and manners and respectful all the time. They answered every question we had--completed all the work while protecting carpets in my house etc. What a great company and group of workers ! They worked until 6pm without even taking a break !-- (even though it started to rain--they still worked ! ) Whatever they were doing as a team--they were double checking --triple checking with each other ALL the time that it was done right and that no mistakes were mentioned ! They were so professional and Patience is a virtue !! I also have to mention Sarah--she answers the phone for the company 24/7--She is wonderful too ! I am so glad we had the pleasure to find them and had everything done with this company !"

"Everyone from the sales team to office staff and especially the actual plumbers that came out to do the work were exceptional. Let me say that I felt completely confident with everyone at Polar Plumbing from the beginning to the end. The installation of my AO Smith water softening system was done with the utmost care and professionalism. I'm very happy with the service received and the neat job done. I would absolutely recommend Polar Plumbing to anyone looking for great work and an excellent team of professionals for their home remodeling or repair work. Warmest regards, Joseph R Rivera (Home Owner)"

Toilets questions, answered by experts

The average cost to hire a plumber is typically between $45 and $200 per hour, with a common average rate around $125 per hour. This cost can vary based on your location, the plumber's experience, and the complexity of the job. Rates are often broken down by experience level: an apprentice may charge $45 to $90 an hour, a journeyman $60 to $110 an hour, and a master plumber $80 to $200 an hour. While hourly rates are standard, some plumbers may charge a flat fee for routine projects or offer project-based pricing. It's also common for plumbers to charge a minimum service or trip fee. For reference, some typical flat-rate costs for common jobs include: drain unclogging ($220), leaky faucet repair ($270), burst pipe repair ($400), toilet repair ($300), and water heater repair ($600). Note that these rates are for standard service hours; emergency, holiday, and after-hours calls will cost significantly more.

You definitely can over-tighten toilet tank bolts. Unlike some other materials, porcelain can’t bend or flex, so when you over-tighten a screw into it, it could break against the added pressure. Only tighten them as much as needed to keep them in place and firm; any more and you could risk breaking the porcelain.

Whether wall-mounted or floor-mounted toilets are better comes down to personal preference.

Overall, standard floor-mount toilets are less expensive to purchase and install, but they don’t offer the streamlined, modern appearance and adjustable height of wall-hung toilets. Ease of cleaning should also be considered, as wall-hung toilets are easier to clean than standard models.

Yes, you should caulk a toilet to the floor for several reasons. Bathrooms are constantly wet—and if water splashes out of your shower and collects on your floor, you don’t want it seeping underneath your toilet, where it could potentially cause damage. Plus, caulk adds stability and helps prevent your toilet from wobbling.

Basement toilets don’t always need a pump. However, it is the most common setup because plumbing systems use gravity to move waste away from the home. Basement toilets often sit below the home’s main sewage system, and installing a sewage ejector pump pushes the wastewater and sewage up to the main sewer line. Alternatively, you can use an upflush or macerator toilet that breaks down the waste and pushes it straight to the main sewer line rather than via a sewer line from the bathroom.
