"Perfection. I had a vague idea of what I wanted. Keegan brought a Zen aesthetic to create a peaceful, natural landscape that looks like it has always been here. Very reliable, flexible and communicative in terms of getting the work done. I highly recommend Rock-n-Gardens."

"Anton is a first class craftsman and his team is super detail oriented! When he first came into look at the mess we were dealing with he had no worries and had a plan for everything. We worked along side him and I was really amazed with his work arounds and attention to detail. He went above and beyond to keep the entire project under budget and even did more work because he did not like how some things looked. I wouldn’t even bother with anyone else. You’ll be sorry if you pass on Anton. He is a real diamond in the rough! I cannot say enough good things about Anton and European Craftman and Remodeling."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The best time to plant a tree is in the spring, so the roots have time to grow into the surrounding soil before winter sets in. Some people recommend planting in the late fall. However, planting in the spring reduces the stress on the tree, as it will be emerging from dormancy, giving it the full spring and summer ahead to acclimate and put down roots into the soil.

While you can leave roots in the ground, if you don’t want the shrub to regrow again over time, it’s best not to leave any roots behind. Ensure you remove as much of the shrub as possible, including the root ball and any main roots you can see, to prevent new growth. Some gardeners opt for using a chemical treatment to prevent the stump from growing back, but this can kill beneficial microorganisms living in your soil.

The most important thing to put under a rock garden is the appropriate soil. The specific soil needed will depend on the type of plants you’re growing as well as the environment you live in. You can also put non-woven or woven fabric under the rocks to add to the garden's structural stability.

Determining how many boulders you’ll need for your landscaping project depends on the area you need to cover and how big each boulder is. First, you’ll need to determine how big of an area you want covered, then divide that by the base surface area of the boulders. A landscape professional can help you determine how many boulders will be right for your project.

Most experts recommend a quarter-inch layer of compost for best results, and you will need about .77 cubic yards of material per 1,000 square feet. To measure how much compost to use, take the square footage of your yard and multiply it by .77, then divide that number by 1,000.
