"I spoke to Elias on the phone and he walked me through troubleshooting our heat issue and fixed the problem. It was very refreshing to have someone take the time to talk instead of immediately sending someone and charging a service fee. I will definitely be calling Bestco for any issues I may have in the future!"

"Justin was recommended to me by my neighbor. He was polite on time, extremely knowledgeable, and did a great job servicing my washer/dryer, refrigerator and oven. Now I know why my dryer (Bosch) has to work so hard (stupid NYC restrictions on amperage) and why my oven doesn't cook the way it should (again European appliance in NYC). I would recommend Justin to anyone. In fact, I posted my review on my building's electronic bulletin board and my neighbors are calling him and raving about his service!!!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

No, not all HVAC systems have a fresh air intake, but there are many advantages to having one. For example, a fresh air intake can boost the air quality inside your home and help your furnace run more effectively. Plus, it can make your house more energy efficient, possibly saving you money on your utility costs.

You should know the main components of an air conditioner: the condenser coils, evaporator coils, drip pan, AC filter, ducts, and refrigerant. Each part plays a key role in the performance and safety of your AC system. When tracking the source of AC issues or odors, it helps to know where to look. Your outdoor unit houses your condenser coils, fan, and compressor. Your indoor unit houses your evaporator coils, drain lines, and filter, and it connects to your ductwork.

Most HVAC companies recommend against setting your AC below 70 as it could freeze up the system and cause more problems. Regardless of how hot it is outside, there is generally a 20 degree difference between the outside and inside temperatures, so even if it’s 100 degrees outside, your AC will likely not be able to cool your home to 70 degrees.

A dirty air conditioning coil can cause your unit to work overtime, leading to reduced efficiency, higher energy use, more wear and tear, and possible ice buildup. If the coils corrode, refrigerant can leak, causing damage, possible mold growth, and an expensive repair bill. By cleaning your AC coils once a year, you’ll have a more efficient unit that’s likely to last longer.

The average life span of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years. Even if your old air conditioner is still functional, it isn't as energy-efficient as a newer system (especially one with an Energy Star designation). Older HVAC systems aren't as efficient, and the 10-year mark is when you should start making full system replacement plans. Twenty years in, that plan should be well underway rather than waiting for the unit to die.
