"Justin was recommended to me by my neighbor. He was polite on time, extremely knowledgeable, and did a great job servicing my washer/dryer, refrigerator and oven. Now I know why my dryer (Bosch) has to work so hard (stupid NYC restrictions on amperage) and why my oven doesn't cook the way it should (again European appliance in NYC). There are a few things you can do to make your AC repair technician’s job easier and your home more comfortable while you wait for AC repair:

  • Cut back trees, shrubs, and weeds around the outdoor compressor 

  • Clear a pathway inside and outside to your AC components

  • Set up a ladder for attic access if necessary

  • Pull your window AC out of the window and place in an easily accessible spot

  • Supplement with fans and open windows to help keep your house comfortable

You will only need to refill your AC with refrigerant if it has a leak. Otherwise, a modern, well-maintained AC will most likely never need a recharge. You may notice a leak in an older system if your bills are higher, you hear a hissing sound, or if the air is blowing out hot.

Your AC might not cool after a power outage because of a tripped circuit breaker, blown fuse, or damage to the compressor or capacitor. If you notice your AC not working after a power outage, in most cases, the breaker has tripped or the system has built-in brownout and blackout protection. Reboot the AC by turning it off at the thermostat, resetting the circuit breaker, and waiting 30 minutes to turn the AC on again. 

To reset your air conditioner, start by turning it off at the thermostat. Then, shut off power to the AC system at the circuit breaker. Some units have a dedicated "reset" button; if yours does, press and hold it for three to five seconds. If your air conditioner doesn't have a reset button, or if you are resetting it after a power outage, leave the circuit breaker off for at least 30 minutes to allow the system to reset itself. Afterward, turn the power back on at the breaker, turn on the AC from the thermostat, and set it to "cool" to test the system.
