"The service that CES provided was great, they were prompt in coming, delivered the necessary drawings when promised. However, I was disappointed that Home Advisor did not provide any other Structural Engineers for me to chose."

"I needed a structural Engineer report for the building dept. to establish the feasibility of doing a renovation on my cabin which recently suffered a fire. Mike was amazing- first of all, his office secretary is reachable, professional, and responsive. Secondly they were able to get me an appointment within just a few days of my call which I really appreciated after having a hard time even getting other companies on the phone or to call back. Mike was on time, efficient, gave great advice/insight and sent me the report within 5 days of the inspection. Do yourself a favor hire this guy if you need help!!! TJ"

"Mike was not able to provide the specific service I was seeking (not related to structural engineering). He took a considerable amount of his time to discuss the issue with me and to share what knowledge he did have despite not being his area of expertise. I would certainly contact him again in the future if my project fell within his purview."

In business since 1960

We are an engineer's engineer offering structural engineering and vehicle parking design services. Our experience illustrates an ability to provide simple, innovative solutions to unique conditions which separates us from cookbook designers. Instead of overly conservative designs that lead to inflated construction costs, we provide designs that satisfy economic, aesthetic, and performance requirements. \n\nThornton Engineering specializes in the structural design of prestress concrete and total prime design services of parking structures, but our record shows a broad range of building types and construction techniques in our designs. In keeping with our philosophy of innovation, we do not use generalized "canned" computer design programs written by other engineers. Rather, the responsibility we have to our clients has led to the development of our own design programs.

"Mike, the owner of the firm, showed up on Saturday morning immediately after I placed a request to the Angie's list. He reassured he would do a study of the structural design of the railing (steel cable) and send me the confirmation on the very next business day. A very professional and friendly person with a reasonable rate. I highly recommend his service for those of you who could not find a civil engineer when the scope of the job is too small that most big firms are not interested. The entire process has been very pleasant and stress-free."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

In Kingston, address urgent issues like foundation cracks, sagging floors, or water intrusion—especially after heavy rain or snow—right away to prevent further structural damage. Less critical projects, such as minor wall cracks or planned layout changes, can often wait for better weather or after historic district reviews. Always factor in Kingston’s winter freeze-thaw cycles and monitor older homes closely if you choose to delay repairs.

Helpful?

Common mistakes in Kingston include neglecting required historic district approvals, overlooking floodplain regulations, or starting work during harsh winter months. Attempting DIY repairs on stone or brick foundations without understanding local soil conditions can worsen problems. Unpermitted work may also complicate future home sales. To avoid setbacks, always coordinate with professionals familiar with Kingston’s historic homes and seasonal challenges before beginning any structural project.

Helpful?

Structural engineering in Kingston homes is aimed at resolving foundation settlement, moisture intrusion, and adapting historic layouts for modern needs. Many homes here, especially those near the Hudson River or in the Stockade District, face shifting soils, basement flooding, and heavy snow loads on older roofs. Addressing these issues helps maintain safety, supports energy efficiency, and preserves the architectural integrity unique to Kingston’s housing stock.

Helpful?

Combining structural engineering with other upgrades in Kingston is often wise, especially for historic homes in neighborhoods like Uptown or Rondout. For example, if you’re reinforcing a stone foundation, consider scheduling basement waterproofing or updating drainage systems at the same time. Coordinating roof repairs with attic insulation upgrades can also help address snow load concerns. Bundling projects can streamline permits, minimize disruption, and better preserve your Kingston home’s unique character.

Helpful?

In Kingston, cosmetic projects—like opening walls or restoring original woodwork—often require extra design review, especially in historic neighborhoods. Functional projects, such as stabilizing a settling foundation or addressing flood damage, focus on safety and structural integrity and may be expedited for approval. Cosmetic upgrades are typically planned around weather and personal preference, while functional repairs may qualify for emergency permits or insurance, making timing and requirements distinct.
