Small jobs welcome

"A great experience! Mike Duval reviewed my concerns about a recent leak and past house settling and looked over our house. I wanted to make sure what we had previously assumed was mild long-term settling was not something more serious in light of some recent findings. Mike was very thorough and reassuring in his explanations of his findings that our structure was stable - he explained that we really did not need anything done for the type of settling we had. We were very happy to hear this, and happy we had him take a look as his fee was very reasonable for peace of mind. He even gave us some tips on some other questions we had in regards to water drainage outside our house."

We are an engineer's engineer offering structural engineering and vehicle parking design services. Our experience illustrates an ability to provide simple, innovative solutions to unique conditions which separates us from cookbook designers. Instead of overly conservative designs that lead to inflated construction costs, we provide designs that satisfy economic, aesthetic, and performance requirements. \n\nThornton Engineering specializes in the structural design of prestress concrete and total prime design services of parking structures, but our record shows a broad range of building types and construction techniques in our designs. In keeping with our philosophy of innovation, we do not use generalized "canned" computer design programs written by other engineers. Rather, the responsibility we have to our clients has led to the development of our own design programs.

Completing structural engineering projects in New Paltz can significantly enhance your home’s resale appeal, especially with the area’s historic homes and discerning buyers. Documented improvements like foundation stabilization or roof reinforcement add value, reassure buyers about long-term safety, and may simplify insurance processes. These upgrades also help your property stand out in the Hudson Valley market, making it more attractive and competitive when it’s time to sell.

Helpful?

In New Paltz, structural engineers closely assess the foundation—often stone or concrete—along with basement conditions, floor framing, and load-bearing walls. Roof structures are checked for snow load capacity, and exterior features like chimneys, porches, and decks are evaluated for stability. Soil conditions, including drainage and frost depth, are also reviewed to ensure the property’s long-term structural integrity.

Helpful?

Signs of thorough structural engineering work in New Paltz include stamped engineering drawings, properly filed permits, and clear documentation showing compliance with building codes. Look for detailed calculations tailored to local soil and weather conditions, inspection reports from third parties, as-built drawings, and warranty information. These elements demonstrate that the work meets high standards for safety and durability, which is essential in New Paltz.

Helpful?
