"I needed a structural Engineer report for the building dept. to establish the feasibility of doing a renovation on my cabin which recently suffered a fire. Mike was amazing- first of all, his office secretary is reachable, professional, and responsive. Secondly they were able to get me an appointment within just a few days of my call which I really appreciated after having a hard time even getting other companies on the phone or to call back. Mike was on time, efficient, gave great advice/insight and sent me the report within 5 days of the inspection. Do yourself a favor hire this guy if you need help!!! TJ"

"I am having a full master bath and kitchen remodel done with new layouts in both rooms and knocking out a wall. Evolution worked with me to quickly get a drawing done of the new layouts so that the contractor could get started on the project. They made sure to include me in the process so that the design would be done exactly as my wife and I envisioned. They communicated effectively throughout the process and were always courteous and professional. I recommend them to anyone with drafting needs."

"We used Lucas Architecture for the design of our new house. Jennifer was a great architect to work with! We told her exactly what we wanted, she told us a time frame to have the preliminary prints for us and kept her word. She kept in contact throughout the entire process constantly updating us and asking questions, providing helpful hints or ideas, and making sure she was on the correct path to what we really wanted. She then sent over the prints and asked us to review. We had a phone call with her to tell her what we liked, didn't, and things we talked through to make the plans better. She then worked to finish the plans and is now working with my building inspector to make sure everything is good. She has very fair prices for the quality of work she is doing and I would recommend her to anyone needing architecture work!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

Structural engineers typically conduct inspections during a home sale or renovation, looking for signs of structural damage in various structures throughout the building, such as load-bearing walls, joists, beams, roofing trusses, foundations, and chimneys. Some of the warning signs that structural engineers check for include:

  • Dry rot

  • Infestation

  • Shifting or cracking foundations

  • Erosion

  • Water damage

  • Sagging, shifting, or damaged walls, ceilings, or roofing support

Costs depend on unit complexity, labor, wall mounting needs, and additional accessories like floating shelves.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

No, squeaky floors do not always mean there is structural damage. The noise is often caused by friction from issues like loose floorboards, gaps between the subfloor and joists, or loose subflooring. While many squeaks are harmless, persistent or worsening noise could indicate a more severe problem. If you notice other signs of structural damage—such as soft or sagging floors, cracks running from the wall to the ceiling, or horizontal cracks in your foundation—it's best to have a professional inspect your floor to determine the root cause.
