"Tim Egan was a gentleman and a professional from our first meeting to gain an estimate to the final meeting when he reviewed the completed work and was reimbursed for his services. Tim arrived with his team as promised and completed the work. His work was beautiful. The respect for my property relative to the final clean up and the placement of his trucks and other paving equipment was commendable. He took extra time to review the stewardship needs for the driveway for the next 6 months and into the future. From start to finish Tim and his team at Egan Paving made the entire process painless and turnkey, and the final results were great."

"What a wonderful company to work with! Harry and his crew scheduled an estimate quickly and got us on their schedule for paving right away. Everyone in the crew worked efficiently, was respectful and you could tell they were experienced. Previously, our driveway was gravel and now with the asphalt, our property looks amazing. "Eldi came to give me an estimate to repair and replace my walkway from the blacktop driveway to the front porch using colored paving stones. The front concrete steps had sunken so low that it was dangerous to use them. We negotiated the color desired and the price for the walk and the steps. Wow, he and his 2-man crew came the next Saturday, worked all day to perfect the design, and they were done by early Sunday afternoon. Elo was friendly, professional, and his team did excellent work. I would recommend him highly. Everyone who has seen the new sidewalk is astounded at its beauty. The work wasnâ t cheap, but it looks like it cost a lot more. D. Hahn, Castleton"

Think of the street as a way to capture all the elements on either side of the road, including the road—a street encompasses the homes or other buildings, the trees, and the road of a given area as defined by the beginning and end of the street on a map. A roadway, however, is the component of the street where cars travel.

If your new pavers look dull or unclean, it is likely due to efflorescence, a chalky, white powder that forms when lime in the pavers gets wet. This condition often resolves on its own, as rain will naturally wash it away within about a year. For faster results, you can use a pressure washer to clean the pavers. Alternatively, consider using cleaning products specifically designed to remove efflorescence or applying sulfuric acid crystals.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

If you notice minor cosmetic problems with your driveway, you should seal it. Look out for cracks and holes on the surface, faded asphalt or concrete, and stains from oil and other chemicals. Replacing your driveway may be necessary if you’re dealing with significant problems—¼-inch cracks, large potholes, and puddles from drainage issues. The cost to install an asphalt driveway typically ranges between $4,200 and $9,000, significantly more than resealing. Consider talking to a professional to discuss whether resurfacing your driveway—a midway project between resealing and replacing—is a better option for you.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.
