"I acquired services from Mike Sheehan owner of MFS MASONRY for front entrance steps and planters. Prior to contracting Mike he explained his products in details with expected transitions that will occur. Mike gave me ample time to make a decision without pressure. No more to be said Mike was hired. Six months later I am very pleased with the results and gratified that I made an accurate decision because my home looks beautiful. "I hired MV Masonry to repair a block retaining wall. After speaking to Mike he advised me to build a new one. I received a few other quotes first but went with Mike because he truly seemed like the only honest person I spoke to and he didn’t cut any corners. I know the wall is going to hold up. Mike was incredibly responsive and is very knowledgeable about what he’s doing. He doesn’t just try to quickly smack on a finish coat and call it a day like most of these other contractors and call it a day. I highly recommend him. You don’t find people like him anymore!!"

"Tim had initially come over for the installation of a French drain on the side of the house, but instead uncovered that our foundation had receded away from the house due to past water damage. He immediately stepped into gear explaining every detail to me and gave me a quote for the amount of work that needed to be done. He and his crew made time in his busy schedule to get the job done and finished it completely in 3 days. I am so grateful for the work they have done and how quickly they did it. I highly recommend this business for anyone experiencing foundation/water damage issues. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

The difference between river rock and landscaping rocks is size, smoothness, and use. River rocks are smooth and flat, as if polished by water, and come in diameters between 1 and 8 inches. Landscape rock can vary in size from small pea gravel installations to car-sized boulders. However, landscaping and river rocks are interchangeable in many situations. River rock is best for pathways, walkways, garden bed mulch, water features, and planting accents, while small landscape rocks can serve as a walkway base, gravel playground areas, and filler between pavers.

There are many things to look for when buying a brick house. Here are some of the key things you should pay close attention to.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.

Yes, it is usually possible to repair a damaged brick mailbox. A professional brick mason or masonry contractor can perform the repairs. They can assess the damage, provide an estimate, and help you determine if the repair is worthwhile based on the mailbox's value and the extent of the damage. The repair process may involve sourcing replacement bricks and mortar. Damaged bricks can be cut out and replaced, or the mortar joints can be cut out and retucked. It's important to note that the new mortar may differ in color from the original. If the mailbox insert itself is damaged, it can typically be cut out and replaced as well. If your brick mailbox has been completely destroyed, you should check with your local building code enforcement office before rebuilding, as some areas do not allow brick mailboxes due to the potential hazard they pose to drivers.

Yes. Black stains are more than an eyesore. Some black stains can pose health concerns, especially for those with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. Some stains can also damage the brick’s structural integrity, harming the mortar and resulting in more expensive repairs.

A traditional rectangular brick that is used for siding, brick walks, and pathways is 8 inches long by 4 inches wide. If you are shopping for fire bricks, the standard dimension is typically 9 inches long by 4.5 inches wide.
