"As it happens, Wilber's Painting has skilled carpenters on staff who are competent, experienced, and committed to old world craftsmanship. Our good fortune was getting Maynor, a highly talented carpenter, who constructed and installed the door, which is quite attractive. The installation was tricky because the 90 year-old frame was not perfectly squared but he managed to get the right fit. Mahogany was used for the door frame and safety glass for the insert. I opted not to have a screen insert, so the glass is a permanent fixture."

"Summary: Bryan did an excellent job building a metal roof over an existing concrete slab in my backyard. I am very happy with the work that he did. In fact I have received compliments from three different neighbors, including one that I had never met before but saw the work being done from the street and wanted to take a look because he wanted to do something similar with his home. I have already recommended him to a friend, who decided to go with Bryan for a project. And I would hire Bryan again for future work. More Detailed Review: I have an existing concrete slab in my backyard that I wanted to build a roof over. Bryan was one of four contractors I interviewed for the project. I decided to go with Bryan because I liked that he was very straight forward and I felt his quote was fair and reasonable. My township requires that either the homeowner submit drawings for the project or that an architect be hired. I am not an engineer and I have never worked construction before. Although all of the contractors recommended that I submit my own drawings because it was a straightforward project and I could save myself several hundred dollars, Bryan was the only one that offered to help me with them, which he did. And this was before I even agreed to hire him. As a new homeowner and somebody who has heard one too many stories of home improvement projects gone wrong, I appreciated the fact that Bryan was very patient and always answered any questions or concerns that I had. In addition, I was always able to get a hold of him by phone or email. And once work had begun, he checked in with me at different stages of the project to make sure that I was satisfied with the progress so far. The start date was delayed a couple of times because of all the bad weather that we had. However, Bryan was very good about keeping me informed during this time and I was always able to get a hold of him when I wanted an update on things. When the project did begin, I was very pleased with how smoothly the work progressed and how everything was completed in a timely fashion. The footings were dug and inspected within a couple of days. Once the footings passed inspection, the frame was put up several days later. After the framing passed inspection, the roof was built and the trim was quickly put up. It is clear that when you hire Bryan to do a job, your project is his priority until it is completed. And I was pleased with how his crew kept the work area clean and professional every day after the day was done. As I mentioned, two of my immediate neighbors saw the work that had been done and were very complimentary of it. This includes my neighbor who has personally done a lot of home renovations on his own house. I also had a neighbor from the next street over stop by and ask to take a look at the work (at this time only the frame had been built) because he wanted to do something similar in his backyard. He was also very impressed with the quality of the work. I am very happy with the work that Bryan did and how professional and reliable he was during the whole process. And I highly recommend him."

"Henry contacted me immediately once I put my request through, even though it was Sunday. We made an appointment for that same Sunday afternoon, he saw what had to be done, gave me a very reasonable estimate and went to work right away. Very professional, open minded and friendly. We scheduled more repairs for next week, which I hadn’t planned, due to his likable, friendly and professional demeanor. I would Highly recommend him to anyone needing home repairs."

Small jobs welcome

"
Don is a thorough professional - he arrived at the agreed upon time, reviewed the work, offered several suggestions, setup time expectations, set about his work, and finished up without much intervention.
When he started his work, he setup drop-cloths and also cleaned  up before he left.

For installing the bi-fold doors, he rightly suggested opening up the packaging and measuring them for the door frame. The clearance in the door frame was a bit tight and he informed me upfront that would lead the doors to not close fully. I appreciated this honesty.

Overall I am very happy with Don's work and would strongly recommend him."

"I hired Aztec for major repairs due to termite damage. They were prompt, professional, and easy to work with. They came in less than 10 days after we contacted them to FINISH the work. First, they evaluated the damage and walked me through the needed repairs which included placing three new steel support beams along with two main horizontal wood beams and several sistered beams. They were able to complete the work, once they started, in three days. At each step, I was informed of progress and there were no surprises (from my end). The work included everything from removing electrical wiring and then replacing it, pouring the new steel vertical support beams, affixing them solidly into my concrete floor, and then pacing the numerous horizontal beams. I could not recommend AZtec (and Greg!) more."

"Great work!!! I needed to add outlets to an newly restored outside/inside deck. When the installer arrived, I told him exactly where I wanted the outlets and switches. He told me most of my layout was no problem but one of the outlets and switch would require a lot more electrical wire (which is very expensive at this time (May â 21). He give me an alternate layout that did what I wanted for NO extra cost over the original quote! IES, LLC is my contractor now for all future electrical work!"

FAQs for carpentry projects in Kingston, NJ

The average cost to hire a woodworker for a project in your home is around $65 per hour, but hourly rates can range from $35 to $250 or more, depending on the experience and skill of the woodworker. Your total woodworking project cost will depend on the complexity of the work, the type of wood, the number of projects, and any other materials your project requires. You could hire a professional woodworker to create everything from a custom cabinet to ornate, unique staircases.

Generally, general contractors charge between $50 and $150 hourly, though not every contractor charges by the hour. If charging based on the project, you can expect a markup of 10% to 20% of the construction cost. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 daily if charged by the day.

While city and state laws vary on general contractor licensing requirements, hiring an unlicensed general contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines for your area.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

Every woodworker has different skills and experience, so we recommend asking the following questions when hiring a woodworker for your project:

  • How long have you been in the woodworking industry?

  • What experience do you have with my type of project?

  • Do you have customer references I can speak with?

  • How long do you expect my project to take?

  • What is my recourse if I have an issue with your work?

  • Do you charge hourly or per project?

  • Will you work on-site or in your own workshop?

  • Does your fee include the necessary post-job clean-up?

While they perform similar tasks, a carpenter is responsible for the woodworking that goes into construction—like framing, installing sheathing, and hanging kitchen cabinets—while a woodworker tackles more intricate and custom projects—like building custom furniture and installing wainscoting. Based on these definitions, most woodworkers can tackle the jobs of a carpenter, but you should always ask about your specific project when choosing a woodworker to ensure they have the necessary skills to tackle the job.
