"I initially wanted to have a deck built but then after all the bids came in, I changed my mind and decided to build a garage instead. Deck Doctors kept right up with the change. After I accepted their bid, they started shortly after. Great guys to work with. They do good work."

"We have worked with John and his crew before, and they never disappoint. We are now living out of town and thanks to John we were able to complete work on a condo we own in a very short window of time. He is efficient, very trustable, reliable in every way and extremely knowledgeable and experienced. He leads a very good crew also. In this job, they repaired drywall, replaced baseboards, added new quarter round, redid the entire flooring in the unit, painted, and they were willing to do lifting and moving furniture to accomplish this. I would rate John at 5 out of 5 in every area, and I would not use anyone else in or around Wilmington, NC. Thank heavens for his strong work ethic, and his knowledge and expertise, and his ability to organize his crew within a short time frame!"

"David and his team were great, very friendly and professional. We discovered some rain damage while working on the balcony deck and David was very fair in pricing the additional work and not holding my feet to the fire. I would highly recommend Presley and in fact, already have to a friend"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

Framing most homes takes anywhere between five and eight weeks to complete. You’ll need to account for inclement weather conditions, material shipment times, the number of crew members, and the weight of your materials. If the weather is too hot, wet, or cold for the installation, this process could take closer to eight weeks.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.
