Small jobs welcome

"Kyle was personable, professional and went out of his way to pay attention to measures and sturdiness in hanging heavy mirror and pictures. We enjoyed his company and will first call him for any help we need around our house. Highly recommend!"

"Kirk put in gutters, fixed the front doorfram and did some drywall patchwork. Arrived right on que at 8am and worked really hard outside in 105 weather in Wilmington. Great communicator with good ideas on ways to fix thing giving cheaper alternatives to full remodel fixes that really did not need to be done. Really looked for our finances and was very reasonable. He’s now my go-to Handyman for our rental."

"While I haven't hired them yet, due to my schedule, I intend to. Very impressed with the business owner and his quick response for an estimate for my fence. I will definitely be calling in the Fall for a new fence and other house repairs. I know he will provide quality service."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.

Framing is the shell of the house. It includes several steps, including studs, plumbing, and electricity. A professional will ensure the wall frame is secured for the house’s structural integrity.

Framing prices change depending on the material and whether the wall is load-bearing. Most contractors use wood to frame a home, but metal is another popular choice.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Bow windows need support because they are large and extend out from the exterior wall of the home. Bow windows may extend 1 foot to several feet from the outside of the home, so you’ll need to provide additional support to handle this weight. A window contractor will be able to provide the proper amount of support for your new bow window.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.
