"Brian of Copper Electric responded immediately and communicated thoroughly. Our florescent lights in the garage were not working. They scheduled time on the next business day. "This is a great company and my first-time experience with them was outstanding! I got an immediate reply and Alexis was incredibly knowledgeable and her consultation and expertise solved my problem very quickly. This is the best service I have received bar none! I highly recommend them and will surely use them in the future for any electrical issues I have. See below for more details. I had a major issue getting into my outdoor circuit breaker box and it was wedged under a tip meter box and I had a tripped GFI in my kitchen. Alexis was able to advise me on how to safely access the breaker panel without damaging the outer box, which was almost impossible to open. Alexis talked me through the process saving me time and the expense of having one the electricians making a trip to just open my breaker box. Thank you Alexis!!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.

A gas stove doesn't always need a dedicated circuit. Unlike an electric range, which uses 240 volts and requires a 240-volt receptacle, a gas stove only uses 120 volts. In some cases, your electrician will need to replace the existing two-pole circuit breaker with a single-pole circuit breaker as well as swap out the existing 240-volt receptacle with a 120-volt replacement.

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

An outlet can trip because the circuit it’s on is overloaded, meaning the devices plugged into it are drawing more power than the circuit can safely carry. Another culprit could be because a power surge from a storm or accident caused a problem with your local electrical grid or there’s a short or a fault causing power to run through the circuit in a dangerous or unplanned way.

Often, you can add extra breakers to an electrical panel. A new breaker can help with new appliance needs, and it’s a common solution when finishing an attic or basement. However, adding extra breakers can’t bring in more amps to your house, so you still need enough amp service to power everything in total.
