"We hired DDK Construction to build a 16ft x 32ft second-floor deck for our home, and we're very pleased with the results. One of the standout aspects of working with DDK was their handling of the permitting and paperwork with the city, which made the process much smoother for us. The deck itself is solid and well-built. We especially appreciated their straightforward approach to costs—we paid them for labor only, and we purchased the materials ourselves based on their recommendations. This transparent method meant no markup on materials, and we had the freedom to choose exactly what we wanted. While the project took longer than initially expected due to some delays with the city of Asheville and DDK Construction's other commitments, we were kept informed throughout. The quality of the work was worth the wait. A special mention to Gerry, who provided some excellent suggestions that enhanced both the beauty and functionality of our deck. His insights were invaluable, and we're very happy with how everything turned out. Overall, we highly recommend DDK Construction for their professionalism, quality craftsmanship, and honesty in pricing. We extremely satisfied with our new deck."

Customers say: True professional

"Les took on this work from another carpenter who closed their business. He quickly worked out the drawings, consulted with us regularly and was good about communicating and meeting his commitments including showing up when he said he would. The shelves fit perfectly and look great in the space. We appreciated his design skills and his attention to detail. We would absolutely hire him again."

"Absolutely Fantastic I have worked with many wonderful contractors over the years but Rick Cox (dba Carolina Carpenter) is at the top of the list. He and his son, Josh, are extremely talented, resourceful and get the job done at a reasonable cost. They and the electrician, plumber and other professionals they use are delightful to work with and of the highest honesty and integrity. In June 2018 my wife and I purchased a house in Connestee Falls, Brevard, NC which was beautifully located but in need a great deal of work. After interviewing a number of contractors, we chose Rick because of his directness, obvious competence and easy manner. The renovation required complete gutting of the core areas, including the removal of several walls and a faux stone wood-burning fireplace. Rick started while we were still in NY and when we arrived in mid-August, he had neatly removed the fireplace. In the following 11 months, he replaced it with gas burning fireplaces in the living room and adjoining Master Bedroom (a very difficult thing to do in the space we had), expanded the rear hall, closed several exterior windows, installed 4 exterior windows and sliding doors, re-floored, re-sided and painted most of the common areas, rebuilt and upgraded the stairway to the lower level and put in a fantastic new kitchen. The project cost six figures and encountered many setbacks as removal of walls and floors exposed poor electrical work and many other preexisting deficiencies. However, in each case, Rick, Josh and his associates developed creative solutions and, as we went along, they helped us refine our vision of what we wanted so that the finished product far exceeded our initial expectations. With his fine carpentry expertise, Rick provided a new beamed ceiling and log mantle and wood work around the new living room fireplace which is itself the artistic focal point of the room. He also transformed an eye-sore half wall into a beautiful built-in cabinet which is integral to the new dining area. Rick and Josh work quietly and efficiently and are upfront about timelines and their availability. In fact, when the demands of a difficult new client caused them to fall behind the timeline they set, they worked on weekends to get current. You would be fortunate to have Rick and Josh working with you. We were. They came as workmen but stayed as friends. "My husband and I are extremely pleased with Paul's workmanship, as well as that of Maya and the others who worked on our project. They turned our open uncovered deck into a beautiful 4-season sunroom and full bath. Even working in cold and rainy winter conditions, they still made rapid progress on building our new rooms. Any questions or issues we had were addressed immediately, and they cleaned up thoroughly every day when they were done working. We would definitely hire Ragan Construction for any future projects."

"John listened to exactly what I needed for both my projects: 4 built in bunk beds and 1 outdoor daybed. He emailed multiple designs and solutions. He spent time making sure everything was perfect, from the stain to the inch of space. You will not be disappointed if you hire Wolfwerks."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

Yes, you can hang picture frames, shelves, and other items on Trusscore panels. For lightweight items (less than 30 pounds), the company recommends using adhesive strips rather than nails or screws. However, you’ll need to secure heavier objects to a stud in the wall. In these situations, Trusscore recommends cutting away the panel material and fastening the object to the stud with metal hardware.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.
