"I needed a pantry as a present for my wife. David and his crew were very prompt and efficient. We discussed what I wanted, what materials I wanted to reuse from the left over barnwood, and they went to work. "Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

You want a small gap of 1/8 of an inch between the door and the jamb. However, the gap size depends on the direction the door swings and whether it contains glass. You will also want to aim for the same size gap on all sides of the door, so it opens and closes smoothly.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Kick plates are usually installed on the “push” side of a door, but there are plenty of reasons to install them on both sides. Interior kick plates can offer protection from pet scratches, doors being kicked closed, and even kids’ toys during enthusiastic play sessions. Consider what kind of use and abuse your door gets to determine which side or sides to install a kick plate on.

Though you can remove your interior door and paint it on a flat surface, doing so can be more time-consuming and labor-intensive. The easiest way to paint an interior door is by simply leaving it on its hinges and then painting both sides of the door all at once. That way, you can avoid having to reinstall the door, you don’t have to find a project site to paint it, and you get a faster dry time.

Spacing a door is tricky since you need to leave enough of a gap for the door to move freely and not get stuck when the slab and frame contract and expand in dry and humid conditions. The ideal gap between a doorframe and slab is 1/8 of an inch. If the gap is any larger, the door will feel drafty. But if the gap is any smaller, the slab can get stuck due to weather changes.
