"We had really hard water that was leaving white residue on everything and difficult to deal with. Steve installed a water softener and it's been much better since. He got the job done in the time specified and for the up front price. Would hire again. Thanks Steve"

"I normally do not write bad reviews, I talk directly to the business. Unfortunately, that hasn't produced good results. Almost 4 years ago, Hague Water Systems contacted me regarding a water softener. I needed to replace my water tank so I purchased both from them. I have been happy with the system and the installer/service technicians until last year. Installer and service technicians anre great! About a year ago I noticed that the hot water tank was leaking and called Hague. I was told that they don't warranty hot water tanks and that I needed to contact the manufacturer. I contacted the manufacturer and they said it does have a warranty and to contact the installer to replace it. I've gotten all kinds of excuses from Hague "we don't warranty that, we are short installers, that is another dept, etc." Hague hasn't even come to check it out. I'm attaching pictures of the mess I'm dealing with. They say they warranty their products. I still have a defective hot water tan"

"I needed a new water heater and also had a new kitchen sink and faucet and new bathroom sink and faucet. L.J. called and was able to get me on their schedule quickly. His team was prompt, professional, and personable! They did fantastic work! Replaced my water heater, sinks and faucets in the same visit and even corrected the plumbing for my kitchen sink and the venting for my water heater. They were totally transparent with pricing and there weren’t any curve balls. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and will definitely be calling them for any future needs."

"We recently purchased a foreclosure which had an 18 YO electric water heater. I decided we should replace that sooner rather than later. There are several new options such as tankless and heat pump models. I have typically chosen gas water heaters in the past for efficiency and quick recovery. Since the house never had a gas water heater, I would have to go high efficiency in order to use PVC out the side of the house for supply and exhaust. Through all my research, I settled on a gas tankless. I put out bids on HomeAdvisor and Angie's List and one of those that reached out was Zack at Mac Wilson Plumbing. Zack sounded knowledgeable, he answered my questions, and his prices seemed fair. Zack recommended a Navien tankless which seemed like a good product, so we went forward. I had to have the gas company upgrade the gas meter and run an electric outlet to where the tankless would reside prior to installation. Zack had our new water heater installed just prior to our move in. He had to order a stand for the new water heater and had to make a couple trips to work everything out, but he did not complain. He routed the supply and exhaust PVC piping smartly. They also brought the plumbing up to code by adding an expansion tank and pressure regulator. They also replaced the leaking globe valves with newer ball valve. Furthermore, they put in quick disconnects for the existing water softener with shut off valves so I can easily replace it down the road. He also installed new ball valve for our new whole house steam humidifier that the HVAC company would not do. They were quick and efficient and did excellent work. They also went the extra mile and ran a PVC drain for my water softener and tied it into the HVAC drain. My plumbing now looks modern and clean. Lastly, Zack added a gas line for a gas dryer and gas cooktop at a later time as he is a busy guy and Covid messed with his staffing during our project. I felt his reasonable prices for the great work he did worth the wait. On a personal note, Zack had a key to our home so he could let himself in and I managed to lock us out of our home one night early on. I called Zack in desperation and he promptly came over and let us in, not expecting anything in return. That speaks volumes about who this man is. The Navien tankless water heater is excellent, and I highly recommend them if you are building a new home or upgrading your existing hot water tank. I can run multiple showers simultaneously, back to back, and never run out of hot water. I would highly recommend Zack and Mac Wilson Plumbing due to their excellent work and fair prices. Zack is proficient in his trade, honest, and a man of integrity which is hard to find in the residential building trades these days. I have my plumber and plan to use him for future projects and/or plumbing problems."

"The straight forward truth is they showed up to clean my drain, not to give us a sell job about digging up the yard or replacing the water heater. We had some tree roots that needed removed, not an impacted pipe. I understand digging is the only correction when large roots fill the line or for broken sections. A "Big Name" company was here prior and the serviceman did his best to try to scare my wife into replacing the main line. The Tech used a small router and somewhat cleared a blockage (TP caught in tree roots). That company was supposed to camera our line, but that was a second crew who kept delaying the schedule past the next day. I think they figured out that we were not going to bite on their big ticket sell job. They did refund our money. The line stopped up again in about three weeks, the second "Big Name" company did camera the roots in the line and told me the drain was cracked. They routed the line, did not remove any roots, and charged me. They were nice enough to leave an estimate for $4,500.00 to dig up and spot repair the section. It was easy for me to see the roots as cleanable. I put ROOT X in the line to kill the roots and buy some time. I had seen the Benjamin Franklin name with good reviews on-line and decided to contact them. The dispatch lady, Tory was helpful, but I wanted to speak with a management person because I did not want a sales pitch. The manager, Madonna, completely understood my plight, she had heard my story many times before. Nick and apprentice Joseph showed up the next morning, on time with an "on the way call". Nick is an absolute pro with a friendly personality and a sincere attitude. In the movie "City Slickers", Jack Palance played Curly, remember "one thing"? The Benjamin Franklin Team hit my door with one thing, clean the drain! Do the job that our customer needs and take it from there. Nick changed cleaning heads two or three times to knock out the roots and showed his skill by the way he worked the machine. Joseph studied all of Nick's actions. Nick's camera told the truth, roots gone and no line damage. The darn little root snuck in a joint and grew inside the line to a blob! I was lucky and Nick was straight up front that a cleaning might be enough, but if it was a dig job he would ensure it would be done right. I guess like Benjamin Franklin, I just want a fair price for good work. I will be sharing my story with my neighbors."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

A water softener is a worthwhile investment if you live in an area with hard water. While hard water is safe to drink, it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can cause significant problems over time. These minerals build up inside pipes, reducing water flow and eventually corroding the plumbing system, which can lead to leaks and a shortened lifespan. Hard water also damages fixtures and appliances, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Additionally, it makes soaps and detergents less effective, meaning you'll use more product to get things clean. By installing a water softener, you can prevent these issues. The initial investment is often recouped through long-term savings, including lower energy bills, reduced appliance and plumbing maintenance, and spending less on soap and cleaning supplies. Other benefits include cleaner linens, dishes, and clothing, as well as softer water that is gentler on your skin and hair. In some areas, a water softener can also increase your home's value, making it a valuable long-term investment.

Whether you need a permit or license for a water softener installation depends on your location, as requirements vary significantly. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, some mandate a permit and an inspection, and others require both. In some areas, no special permit or license is needed at all.

To determine the rules in your area, you can contact your local building department or consult a local water softener installer or plumber. Often, only certified professionals are authorized to pull the necessary permits, and they will typically handle the entire permitting process for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check an installer’s license status.

Drinking hard water is not known to have any negative health impacts. Using hard water can lead to dry skin and hair, and the minerals in hard water can build up in pipes, faucets, and appliances. Hard water is more of a threat to your plumbing than it is to your health.

Replacing a water softener costs $200 to $6,000, depending on the capacity of the water softener, the type of water softener, and the amount of people living in your home. An ion exchange water softener is the most common type and costs $500 to $3,000. Water distillers, which cost $1,200 to $4,000, and dual-tank models, which cost $1,000 to $5,000, are definitely pricey, but they offer more filtration or capacity, respectively.

Selecting the right system depends on testing your water to understand the contaminants present and considering your household's water usage and specific needs, such as removing specific contaminants.
