"I regret to say that my experience with R&D was somewhat disappointing. While they eventually completed the painting project, several areas required redoing due to poor initial execution. This not only caused delays but also added unnecessary stress to the process. In addition, daily project cleanup was handled very poorly, leaving the workspace disorganized and adding to the overall inefficiency. The team also required constant oversight to ensure their work aligned with the agreed-upon vision, which detracted from the professional experience. Although their communication was consistent and expectations were clearly outlined, the lack of professionalism and attention to detail made the experience unsatisfactory. I do appreciate their willingness to rectify mistakes, but based on my interactions, I would not recommend their services for large or detail-oriented projects. Significant improvements in execution, professionalism, and daily organization are necessary to provide a better experience for future clients."

I am a Journeyman Union Carpenter by trade but after 15 years left it to pursue other things. I have had rental properties and done hundreds of property rehabs and remodels over the years. I have a working knowledge of plumbing and electrical and I take pride in my work. I also rehab and refinish antique wood furniture and build custom furniture out of old wood and recycled materials. No job is too small and I enjoy meeting all the people that this kind of work leads me too.

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Yes, it’s best to remove the previous coat of stain from your deck before restaining it, especially if the surface is in bad condition. Restaining on top of an old coat can lead to an uneven surface, as the new stain won’t fully soak into the deck material. That said, if your deck is in excellent condition, you may be able to get away with just cleaning the surface instead of sanding it and removing the old stain. If you choose not to remove the previous coat, it’s best to use the same type of stain for the new layer.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.

DIY staining or painting is manageable with proper preparation, including safety measures, necessary tools, and adherence to safe weather conditions for application.

The plastic in composite decking boards protects them enough that you do not need to paint them to prevent warping. In fact, painting composite decking voids the warranty of some manufacturers. Painting can also increase maintenance on the deck, as you must paint regularly to keep it looking its best.

Acrylic paint is one of the best types of paint to use on your home's exterior. It's a durable paint that is also heat- and cold-resistant. While oil-based paint is also durable, it's prone to fading,  making it not as good of an option if you live someplace with extremely high heat. In colder regions, oil-based and alkyd paints become more viscous, which makes it harder to apply the paint.
