"We had an attached screened-in porch that was sinking.Acculevel came in and detailed every aspect of the repair project and then followed thru to the most minuet detail. Excellent work and very detail oriented. Friendly and cooperative service team that completed the work. This seemed like what was going to be a complicated job, using augered jacks, concrete removal, and replacing trex floor. ...In a nutshell, they made what seemed hard..very manageableand 100% solved.Excellent service, excellant price......Terry M."

"Our project was actually a crawlspace encapsulation. We have a lake cabin that was built in the 1960's. It had a dirt floor in the crawlspace with bare block masonry foundation walls. It also had old, damp batt insulation that was falling down from the joist spaces. American Waterworks came in, removed the old insulation (a nasty job!), laid down a 2 layer moisture barrier system and spray foamed the foundation walls and rim joist area. I can't believe what a difference this has made to our air quality, much warmer floors. We used to have to wipe down the windows every morning during the winter because of condensation. Not any more! I would highly recommend this company if you have the same needs!!"

"Grant and Mark came out and raised my front steps by about 4” in back and 2” in front and then raised the areas around it so that there was a smooth transition once again. The area looks incredible and they had some clever ways to make their footprint invisible to the passerby. I’m more than happy with the outcome! Thanks guys!!!"

"I highly recommend Lenâ s company Trilite. The process of replacing my brick with stone veneer went so smoothly. Since Trilite was the manufacturer and the installer in my project, I was able to choose from a myriad of stone and colors. The quality and workmanship of the masons was above and beyond what I expected. The stone is beautiful and it was all done in a timely manner and at a fair price. For stone veneer this is the place!!"

"I wa sin the process of getting my home ready to sell and contacted two other businesses in early March and they would not even come out to give an estimate. When I finally decided to try again I contacted T.U.F.F. Masonry and he came out the next day, kept me updated , did exactly what I wanted. I told Ira when I paid him if there was more then a 5 star rating I would give it to him. Great job Ira thank you"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Due to a short season from late April through October, you should combine masonry work with other exterior projects. Temperatures must stay above 40°F for mortar to cure properly. Bundle chimney repointing with roof replacement to share scaffolding. Pair foundation parging with drainage improvements before the ground freezes. A single permit application in Rochester streamlines the review process and helps you navigate busy contractor schedules efficiently.

Helpful?

Establish a four-part inspection routine for your masonry work to catch damage early. Conduct your most critical assessment in late October before temperatures drop below 40°F. Inspect all mortar joints, chimney crowns, and retaining walls. Check for widened cracks and frost heave damage in late March. Assess drainage and tucked joints in early summer. Always inspect chimney caps and exposed surfaces after severe summer hail storms hit Rochester.

Helpful?

Address masonry work immediately if you spot cracks wider than a quarter inch, spalling brick on shaded walls, or active moisture in your basement. With over 100 annual freeze-thaw cycles across MN, water inside these gaps expands and destroys the structure. You must repair deteriorating chimney mortar before heating season begins to prevent carbon monoxide hazards. Cosmetic surface staining or stable hairline cracks under an eighth inch safely wait.

Helpful?

Watch for hollow mortar joints crumbling within a few years, indicating the contractor performed masonry work outside viable temperatures or used improper mortar. If white salt deposits return quickly, the underlying moisture pathway remains uncorrected. Look for surface flaking, which happens when non-breathable sealers trap moisture during MN freeze-thaw cycles. Forward-leaning retaining walls or recurring chimney flashing separation also signal that previous repairs require a complete redo.

Helpful?

Your home is a strong candidate for masonry work if it features pre-1960s brick veneer, concrete block, or fieldstone foundations. Properties built on the heavy clay soils common around Rochester experience significant soil expansion, putting lateral pressure on foundation walls. Inspect north and east-facing surfaces, exterior steps, and chimneys over 20 years old. These areas stay wet longer and suffer the most stress from harsh winter temperatures.
