"Absolutely terrible experience. Time management, punctuality & quality craftsmanship were non existent. The list of mishaps is too long to share. Take the backsplash, for example. Marble herringbone was installed without spacers, tile was cut with a dry saw, while cutting tile they left the door open so dust was everywhere. We had to hire someone else to remove the tile (had to throw $500 of product away) & reinstall. Everything they touched in our house is a disaster - we can’t even put our fridge back in its spot because they didn’t level the flooring."

I owned small handyman business who hires family members when it is needed. I am fully insured and I Bill at the end of the job unless it is a big job. I would ask for some money down. except check, cash or credit cards with a extra fee.

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

Minneapolis homeowners should account for seasonal humidity changes, which impact flooring expansion and contraction. Winter salt and snow can damage certain surfaces, so entryway flooring should be especially durable. Older homes may require subfloor leveling or moisture mitigation. If your property is in a historic district, review any renovation guidelines. Schedule flooring projects during drier months for optimal installation conditions and lasting results.

Helpful?

In Minneapolis, homeowners often overlook acclimating flooring materials to local humidity, leading to warping or gaps. Skipping thorough subfloor inspections can result in uneven surfaces or squeaks. Choosing flooring types unsuited for MN’s freeze-thaw cycles or not using proper underlayment in basements are frequent issues. Failing to coordinate transitions between rooms or ignoring professional installation standards can also cause long-term problems.

Helpful?

For Minneapolis homes, engineered hardwood and luxury vinyl plank are top choices for flooring installation due to their stability in fluctuating temperatures. Porcelain tile works well in entryways and kitchens, resisting salt and moisture from winter weather. Consider moisture-resistant underlayment for basements and high-traffic areas. Sourcing materials from local suppliers ensures compatibility with MN’s unique climate and enhances long-term durability.

Helpful?

When hiring a flooring contractor in Minneapolis, prioritize those with proven experience handling local climate challenges and a strong portfolio of completed projects. Verify they carry proper insurance and are familiar with city building codes. Clear, written contracts outlining timelines and warranty coverage are essential. Ask about their cleanup process and flexibility with scheduling, especially during busy seasons, to ensure a smooth flooring installation experience.

Helpful?

Combining flooring installation with other home upgrades in Minneapolis can maximize efficiency and minimize disruption. For example, coordinating new flooring with painting or cabinetry work prevents damage to finished surfaces and reduces the need for repeat contractor visits. Plan the sequence carefully—install flooring after messy work like drywall or plumbing to protect your investment and ensure a seamless, professional finish throughout your home.
